"Is that an invitation to take a bite?"

"Just because you're on a diet, doesn't mean you can't admire what's on the menu."
"I thought you stopped wanting me a long time ago? Interesting..."

『 SUNLIGHT TO THE SINNERS IN THIS CEMETERY ➠ A GAIUS GRIEVES SOLO 』 "A story has no beginning or end: arbitrarily one chooses that moment of experience from which to look back or from which to look ahead. . ." Read: twishort.com/imhoc
She stared at him, her look blank. She had no idea what that meant. "What is a black lantern? You might as well be speaking Greek to me."
"That's a black lantern symbol." Gaius was still in shock. He looked at her for a moment, totally taken aback. What did this mean? He had no idea. But, obviously someone very important, probably with a great of money or resources, had done this to her. But why, though?

She turned to him, her own eyes going wide at the look on his face. He'd gone whiter than his normal pale self. "N-no," she stuttered. "It was there when I woke up. It's still quite fresh, as you can see. It's very painful." She tried to ignore it most of the time.
"Laura—" He jumped back in shock. His eyes went wide, mouth agape, hands moving as he spoke. "You don't know what that means?"
"There's something else." She turned to her left and pulled up her hair to show him her neck. There was a symbol tattooed there. She didn't know what it meant, but she felt like she should.
Very few things in this world ever tugged at his heartstrings. He forgot that he had a heart most days, and for good reason. But those words... He turned to look at her, open and honest, and sighed softly. Without another thought, he spoke. "You can always turn to me."

"There's a reason I chose you. Those flashes I have... they're always of you. It's like memories of you are the only thing I have to hold onto." She didn't tell him that they were... intimate memories. Just brief little flashes. A kiss, a caress, holding each other.
He sent a glance her way, curious and intrigued. What was going on with her? Who did this? Why did they erase her memories? It was a mystery. "I'm glad you came to me for help."

She leaned back against her chair and sighed. "Sometimes, just every now and then, I'll get a flash, a brief moment and then it's gone. But I have no context for the memory. So, maybe it's there, but suppressed. I have no idea how to proceed."
He didn't say anything at first. He couldn't. Those memories... They were good, and now they were gone for her. "I'm sorry," he offered. "If I can help, I will. We'll figure out what's wrong."

She shook her head, a feeling of dread in her belly. "The last thing I remember is being on stage in Paris. I was in a performance of Les Mis, and after that.. nothing. I woke up in Prague, and it was five years later."
He swallowed thickly. "You don't remember anything? Nothing at all?" Perhaps it was for the best that she couldn't remember what had happened between them last year.
She set course for Flagstaff, then put on the autopilot. Once that was done, she stared out the wind screen. "A week ago, I woke up in a strange place, and couldn't remember the last five years."
"Safer sounds better." He understood the gesture for what it was worth. And, to him, it was worth a lot. "So, now that we have the time... why don't you tell me about this trouble you're in? I want to help, if I can."
She hadn't filed a flight path. Unease was rolling off him. She made a last second adjustment, dipping the wings to make a sudden turn. "Change of plans. We'll take the long way round. We'll stop in Flagstaff, then Little Rock, then Charlotte. It'll be safer."
"I figured we'd need to stop along the way, I just wasn't sure where." With everything taken care of, he just prayed he wouldn't be found. If Jotunheim ever tracked him down — he wouldn't live to see tomorrow. It would be slow and painful, surely.
She checked her controls, then made her way down the runway. "We'll have to stop in Atlanta to refuel. Can't make it on one stop." She pushed the stick to build up speed before lifting them off the ground. There was nothing like flying in a small plane.
He was dragging his two luggage bags behind him. He set them down and sighed heavily. "Yes, to Gotham." He sat down and buckled himself in afterward.
They did need to talk, but not now. Survival was a top priority. But he needed to know just how bad things were for her. They parked next to her little plane, and she completed the checks quickly and efficiently. Once they were on board, she turned to him. "Gotham?"
"This subject will never be mentioned again, not if I can help it. It was never in the cards for us, darlin'." He fell silent as they made their way to the little airport. His heart ached. And wasn't that something so incredible?

She didn't know. Didn't know he'd looked for her. And the shit thing was, she wasn't sure if that was old or new news. She was lucky she remembered what she did. The gaps in her memory were... frightening, to say the least. "I'm sorry. Can we table this for now?"
"It stings, alright? Us. This. I don't like talking about it. And I don't want to discuss just how long I went looking for you for... You just disappeared." It said a lot, though, that she came to him when she needed help, rather than anyone else in the world.
