anyone know of small (~$500 - $2k) grants that fund interdisciplinary projects in art & field ecology / ornithology? I have two projects in mind: an exhibit on bird-window strikes at UMASS and a short film on shorebird migration in Alaska.
this is a long-billed dowitcher 4 fun
My first chapter is published in Movement Ecology!

oh tringa
Mrs. Bond(E07) fighting with neighbor W20 for the best territory next to a lapwing's nest, or does she want to hijack her husband...? Unbelievable what a spirit for my oldest(18yr) #redshank in my 25year studying #redshanks! @GlobalFlyway @WaderStudy @niooknaw @waderquest
Oh boy, it might be happening. Lesser Yellowlegs we put transmitters on in King Salmon, AK are departing the breeding ground - will they continue down different flyways?? Stay tuned...

Read all about the Greater Yellowlegs that flew in from Alaska and has been hanging out in the #LARiver for a month! --> laaudubon.org/blog/2023/9/11… By @rozybathrick of @UMassAmherst
Compared to the population we're tracking from the interior, the Peninsula breeding birds are showing more variation in their initial departure (timing and destination). Seems that the Gulf offers some options...could be wind access?
Shorebird tracking in Alaska - field tech position open! I am hiring one early-career assistant to help with fieldwork from mid-May - early July in southwest AK.
Apply here - review begins 3/14. 🧵careers.umass.edu/amherst/en…
applicant will work alongside myself (1st year PhD student in the Senner Lab at UMass) and one UMass undergraduate student. we will be nest searching for Yellowlegs spp. and deploying tracking transmitters on breeding adults.
bird handling experience not required - more important is a sense of humor about long days of bog-tromping, contribution to a healthy and safe working/living environment, and an interest in the natural history of mosquitoes

Still seeking 1 grad student for Upland Sandpiper project! Great opportunity to study #migratoryconnectivity and population structure, working with an established set of collaborators across the species’ range. @usask @SCO_SOC #shorebirds #ornithology #birdmigration
running a small and important experiment this morning. neoprene toe covers: do they keep the foot warmer inside or outside the shoe? Riding 10 miles at 25 F, 81% humid, sunny and low wind. Welcoming predictions. Stay tuned.
Min 13 - both feet are cold. The internally lined is feeling squished. Hard to move the toes with so much material in the shoe. Mobility is limited. All toes painfully cold. As an aside, this is when my fingers actually warm up - hot pins and needles.
Min 22 - External neoprene pulls ahead, toes are in noticeably less pain than those internally lined. Wouldn’t call them warm, but they are in less pain.
