the trick of it, it seems, is to choose a less-saturated value in the blue-green range, and when you place it in the blue it'll look orange.

I've always had trouble picking out atmospheric color palettes which weren't just monochrome, like painting an orange shirt in a blue scene.

The further you desaturate a cool color the warmer it feels in contrast to its purer companion and the same for warm colors, in reverse.
