As a fellow doctor, I find it concerning that we're still having this conversation in late 2026. There are so many pathogens that spread through the air (besides SARS-CoV-2). The relevant consideration is shared air, not whether a space is public or private. I wish doctors showed more commitment to protecting their patients from preventable infections. 1/2

The widespread acceptance of the idea that 'Covid is over' while people are still constantly getting Covid over and over again.
What’s the weirdest thing society accepts as normal?

Are we actually living through the most chaotic era in human history, or are we just the first generation with social media forced to watch every tragedy on earth unfold in real time, and the world has always been this dark, we were just never close enough to see it?

Olympic sprinter Beth Dobbin now spends over 22 hours a day in bed because of ME/CFS. NBA player Kristaps Porziņģis has POTS and has been sidelined indefinitely. These are elite athletes. This should put the whole “it’s just deconditioning” argument to bed once and for all.

She forgot the word for computer. My most punctual student. Wednesday, 8:15, Circuit Training. She was never late. Then a fall, a big hematoma on the hip, and a month at home. Yesterday, she walked back in and found me in the lobby. Her shoulder wrapped in KT tape. I asked what happened. "Oh, my hip healed," she said. "This is a new fall." She has a history with Covid she does not keep track of. In 2021 it came with cancer and she made it through. In 2022 it came with Parkinson's for her partner, and it left her in a house that used to hold two. Her hands were folded neatly in front of her, smiling like we had never met. "So what class do you teach tomorrow?" "Wednesday mornings. Circuit Training at 8:15." Her eyes jumped from my face to the floor to the ceiling, searching for the words. "What's the name of the class?" "Circuit training." "What time on Wednesday?" "8:15." She brightened. "Okay, I'm going to put that into a reminder in my... uhhh... you know, that thing you type on." She typed in the air. I guessed. "Your phone?" "No, no." Both hands pointing at the front desk. "That big box clicky screen thing." I looked at the front desk and saw the obvious. "The computer?" She clapped once, sharp and delighted. "Yes! The computer! I'm going to set a reminder on my computer to come to your class tomorrow." She did not remember to come to class today. It feels obvious if you have watched her long enough. Covid gave her the cancer. Covid took her partner. But say it gave her two sudden falls and took the word for computer and you sound absurd for suggesting that was Covid. That is how it works. Covid never comes the same way twice. It takes us so quietly we do not notice what is missing until it is already gone.

🚨 PJ.2.1 infecting a wider range of cells in the body and to be infecting more of them would be *bad*. If Covid can get more effectively into places it hasn't much before, then it can do more damage and trigger even more long lasting dysfunction. ⚠️
We analyzed cell entry and antibody-mediated neutralization of the emerging saltation variant PJ.2.1. Check out our preprint below! #PJ21 1/ We found that PJ.2.1 shows increased ACE2 binding and enhanced entry into cells expressing low levels of ACE2.

When I talk to people about the ongoing impact of COVID, I find it helpful to lead with a concrete, undeniable indicator, which is that there are about 3,000,000 more disabled workers in the US than at pandemic onset.

When covid infects you, it invades and repurposes cells, disrupts your immune system, and can infiltrate your blood stream and lymph system and reach cells in every part of your body. From there it's just a question of what does more cumulative damage: The virus or your body's panicked response to it. And that damage is cumulative with every new infection.

750,000 new infections per day. If even 5% of these people develop Long COVID - a low-end estimate, by the way - that’s 37,500 PER DAY.
