Swing and a miss…
yes, it's interesting: the more you read of experimental literature, the less emotionally engaged you are; reading the Naturalists, with their (somewhat) plodding monochromatic prose, you can see that this is "real life" in its aching banality as, for all its stylistic bravado, novels like "Lolita" & "Pale Fire" are performative & dazzling.

I’ve written before about Wendell Berry’s publishing deals, which haven’t aligned with his values for quite a while. Catapult’s decision to dissolve rather than deal with unionized employees may create a window for something worthier. We'll see. johnbyronkuhner.substack.com…

Replying to @gariellelutz
@gariellelutz is the greatest. No contest. Oddly, Elroy might be runner up.
Who are the great living prose stylists? Let’s say we’ve already named Sally Rooney and Jesmyn Ward. Recent prize winners/nominees like Anne Carson, Marlon James, Daniel Kraus, David Szalay—okay, accounted for. I mean the fuckin stylists. Weird-ass sentence technicians. Who?

Since we can assume all that's published & accessible in public records will be fed into & misappropriated by AI, why not promote a new esoteric literature shared only among an elect sect, w/ access protected by extreme safeguards, preserved in non-digital writing or only memory?

Fixed it: "The Fountainhead is so dense..."
"The Fountainhead “is so dense and complex,” marvels Brad Pitt, “it would have to be a six-hour movie.” (The 1949 film version already has a running time of two hours.) Christina Ricci claims that The Fountainhead is her favorite book because it taught her that “you're not a bad person if you don't love everyone.” Rob Lowe boasts that Atlas Shrugged is “a stupendous achievement, and I just adore it.” And any boyfriend of Eva Mendes, the actress says, “has to be an Ayn Rand fan.”" thenation.com/article/archiv…

Is Nickleback overrated? What a question. Haha. They actually dropped some pretty heavy riffs at the Olympics! Neil Young took gold though.

Before he took the stage, he lifted weights for half an hour so he could belt this one at what he called “peak blood level.”

Also: Matt Bell’s ‘Refuse to be Done,’ Flannery O’Connor’s, ‘Mystery and Manners,’ Ursula K. Le Guin’s ‘Steering the Craft,’ and Ben Percy’s ‘Thrill Me.’ All solid.
There’s Charles Baxter’s ‘Burning Down the House’ and James Wood’s ‘How Fiction Works’, and maybe some parts of Lydia Davis’s ‘Essays 1’, but after that creative writing books really don’t have much value at all

don't really care about the nobel, but i've been spiritually rooting for @gariellelutz every year since she showed up in the official odds.

The only thing REM ever did out of pocket was write Shiny Happy People. Everything else: unimpeachable. Legendary band forever.
REM is a band who was one of the biggest acts on earth at one point, but now has zero cultural footprint.

glad to see they're pushing vollmann, but 'the new four-volume, extraordinary novel' breaks the order of adjectives in unsettling ways.

this can't be repeated enough: the technology allows idiots to do all kinds of dumb shit, which explains how it affects professional life (mine has definitely been affected), but real writers and readers can and should and will proceed as we always have. dilettantes forever.
It will effect a lot of crap—bad novels, bad tv, boilerplate copy—but for auteurs and serious writers and readers it wont matter at all
