The biggest climb of my life. The most dangerous, the most technical, the most beautiful, and without question, the most rewarding. It's been a week, but I’m only now feeling ready to talk about it. After 4 years of high altitude mountaineering in Peru, I've noticed that while your body comes home, your mind often stays behind, lingering in the thin air. The physical recovery has been slow. Weeks of living above 5,000 metres takes a toll on the body. Constant nausea, little appetite, sleepless nights, dehydration, headaches, and constant fatigue. But the worst, Two pitches from the summit I was hit by falling ice, first in the eye, which I'm still waiting to have examined. And then in my knee, leaving me with a deep bone contusion that's still making every step difficult. The mental recovery is harder to explain. You replay decisions, moments, conversations. You think about the people you met, the places you shared, and the mountains you've left behind. And once you've lived this world, every accident feels close to home. Over the past week, two separate incidents on the highest peak in Peru have left one climber dead and three others missing. In a community as small as the one in the Ancash region, these tragedies never feel distant. They're friends, friends of friends, teammates, families. The loss ripples through an entire community. Even as this region sees more climbers than ever before, there is still no helicopter rescue. Every rescue effort is carried out on foot. It's a sobering reminder that in these mountains, a single decision, bad weather, or simply a streak of bad luck, can have devastating consequences. My brain keeps reeling of what more I can do to support their efforts. My heart is with everyone waiting and hoping for news and safe passage with the rescue teams still out there.
