H/T to @RANGEMedia4all for inspiring this story. After @danielwreporter found a bunch of AI-generated content in Spokane opinion pages, we used the same tool to test op-eds published in Idaho. Here's what we found:

The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is shocked and disappointed by @mcclatchy 's decision to lay off 33% of its unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune (Tacoma), Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald. This includes 10 journalists in Idaho, and seven across Washington. These severe cuts will hobble these news organizations and leave the public throughout the Northwest less informed about the events and decisions that affect them, and with fewer people holding the powerful to account. These are journalists  who investigated local hospitals, served as watchdogs over state and local government, showed up at every high school game, jumped in to cover breaking news like wildfires, covered news in overlooked communities, and monitored development in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. One of these papers will no longer have a dedicated reporter covering city hall. Another will no longer have anyone dedicated to covering the state capitol. McClatchy has decided that short-term profits for a hedge fund matter more than the wellbeing of the communities that its newspapers are supposed to serve. That is a model that is destined to fail.

More from me and @ryansuppe on the Idaho School Benefit Trust, which has run out of money. Trustees knew the fund was dwindling, but didn't tell schools until earlier this month. “We thought we were navigating our way through this,” a trustee said. idahoednews.org/top-news/sch…

An insurance trust that more than 100 school districts and charters rely on has run out of money. Those schools might face an "immediate cash impact." Story from me and @ryansuppe idahoednews.org/top-news/ins…

A club soccer coach built and donated fields at Middleton High. That club then used those fields for free. But after a failed levy, that is changing. idahoednews.org/top-news/no-…

But I still asked the department's spokeswoman about the link, and I shared Idaho Signal's post. Here's her response. (2/3)

If you want to know whether the SPLC program is actually being taught in Idaho schools, the people to ask are your local school trustees and/or administrators. (3/3)

Local school leaders, not the Idaho Department of Education, select curriculum. So suggesting that the SPLC program is "embedded" in the Idaho education system, based on a link under the federal programs tab on the department's website, is a big leap. (1/3)
Will @idahoednews cover this? Will any Idaho legacy media give it a mention? I guess this is an IdahoSignal exclusive. idahosignal.com/splc-program…

Still just one active account in Idaho Sunshine in the race for superintendent of public instruction. Republican incumbent Debbie Critchfield has raised $90K for the 2026 election in addition to $107K leftover from 2022. War chest is $178K.

Budget-setting lawmakers asked about special education funding and public schools’ growing fund balances, and they debated local tax increases in districts with declining enrollment. One legislator asked how K-12 schools would handle a 5% cut. idahoednews.org/top-news/sta…

Six months into negotiations, McClatchy Media is continuing to push back against common sense limits on AI in news. If we don’t ensure AI ethics are put in place now, it will soon be too late. If reporters don’t fight for our readers, no one will.

No, it doesn’t.
Our state Constitution actually forbids the city, county, and state fire departments from saving your church from a fire. Read why in the latest op-ed from me and Katherine Hartley at @PacificJustice
