Today we broke ground on 90 new homes in the Sunset for families and our veterans. This affordable housing coming to Irving Street is part of our broader strategy to keep building housing across all of San Francisco. Thank you Supervisor @JoelEngardio for your continued advocacy for more housing. And thank you to @California_HCD, @bankofamerica and @TNDC for supporting these homes and working with us to get more housing built.

2 farmworker families will have to keep living in rusting storage containers because the Half Moon Bay Planning Commission thinks an extra five feet is too tall and scary
Replying to @cafedujord
Staff from Mercy Housing speaking now. It sounds like they’re shaving off 5 feet of the project’s height, and including fewer 2 bedroom units to appease the planning commission 😞

The "300k a year is middle-class in San Francisco" discourse is the yin to the "Farmers who own millions in equipment and land are normal Americans" discourse's yang

i don't think people have internalized how little Manhattan builds anymore. Since the start of the pandemic, Manhattan has built less housing than Jersey City, Durham NC, and Salt Lake City, UT. Not even on a per-capita basis, just straight-up less housing!

The viral rent to income video is a lie. I tracked down the original source & methodology. It forgot to adjust HUD's rental data for inflation, but did use "real" median income, which is adjusted for inflation. While a problematic rent/income gap exists, we need to tell the truth

Our leaders in Sacramento have one week to save public transit. June 15th is the state budget deadline. I again urge the State Legislature to work with the Governor to fund transit and prevent the fiscal cliff. – at San Francisco, CA

This post raises a super-important question: Is there any political constituency in California for policy-efficacy evaluation? 1/15
Housing policy is tough to implement for many reasons. One is that it's not always designed to be implemented. It's designed to pass. bit.ly/3iQRcio

Bratu et al's paper on migration chains in Helsinki is now in published in a peer-reviewed journal; Mast's was in 2021. Both find that new market-rate housing creates openings in older, lower-price housing—critical for maintaining affordability doi.org/10.1016/j.jue.2022.1…

Here we have it, the budget breakdown for the $1.7m toilet in Noe Valley. Highlights: – Actual Construction Costs = $750k – Architecture and Engineering Fees = $300k, or 40% of construction costs. – Construction Management Fees = $150k, or 20% of construction costs.

Did you know that just a small number of landlords are responsible for displacing a large number of tenants, year after year? We have updated our data on which buildings have filed the most evictions in 16 cities across the country (THREAD, 1/7) evictionlab.org/eviction-tra…

To anyone who cares about public transit, this piece is agony to read. But it's not about buses. It's about the mental health emergency that is everywhere in the US, but is most visible in urban public space. 1/x washingtonpost.com/nation/20…
