Solidarité avec les lycéens 🤍
(I may love translating German but I’m glad I read French so I can watch the world they grow up to better)
Cannot express how much I love this. Insomnia love levels. It’s Vienna Secession and Influences Autumn officially now, none of us can stop it.
A little signal to noise homage to Klimt for the enjoyment of @saintsoftness
One of the very salient things that also strikes me about translating Trakl is that given that he died of suicide at 27, he will never have what we could call a mature literary voice. Schiele too, his visual mirror to me, died of Spanish Flu at 28. Perpetually early work…
Unlike say Rilke, I think someone even in their 30’s or 40’s like me has to be very careful about back-projecting on historical figures for whom age was constructed very differently, but also who just didn’t have that much time to form a coherent corpus of work and reception.
This article by @Delistraty on Schiele for the Paris Review in 2018 sensitively treats a topic I think has a lot of dimension-- and consequences for Trakl too, who I'm working on a new translation from tonight: theparisreview.org/blog/2018…
Thinking about Trakl's "An Den Knaben Elis" as I write this, which has a mirror in Schiele's use of young, nude bodies. Cultural anxiety around the arousal of the adult self, and the effective creation of childhood as a category at the time both worked is important here.
I'm so sorry to everyone at Catapult, in what is clearly a nasty response to workers unionizing that only hurts everyone. In this era of austerity, losing another indie is sickening- please, authors, keep us updated on how we can support your books, and staff on what we can do.
A certain genre of spaceship image is to me, also inherently autumnal feeling somehow.
(of course thinking of you, @sevensixfive)
Today’s leg warmers are red and sparkly. Leg warmer season continues apace. Another beloved autumnal thing…
I'm writing about the nature of autumn and the autumnal more broadly as a sensibility. My references are Trakl, Schiele, Rilke, and Hölderlin-- but what are yours? What is the essence of a fall thing, or feeling for you? Bonus for pictures or oddities.
The next piece is for a magazine and will be much more opaque in relation to its sources (and borders on fiction/prose poetry) but the last time I did autumnal Schiele and Trakl was for Substack: avmarraccini.substack.com/p/…
