“That our success wasn’t effectively turned into revenue wasn’t on us.” This whole thread from the glorious @TracieHunte is full of facts and love for the audio craft that always deserves so much more. In solidarity with everyone let go from WNYC.
When I started working at WNYC in the Fall of 2010, I’d just been laid off from ABC News. So it’s kind of full circle that my time at WNYC is ending in a layoff too. It’s taken me so long to write this thread because I’m just so sad.

What now? La Brega is a co-production of Futuro Studios, and they are actively fundraising to keep our beautiful community of listeners going. ♥️ In the meantime, if you need a host, reporter, producer, editor, or even an idea generation machine, let me know. P’alante.

Wow! If you’re from Brooklyn and still live here, you can SEE the gentrification. But to have it laid out in graphs + charts in the Bklyn Borough President’s report is striking. NYC is the 7th most segregated U.S. city. And it’s gotten worse in Brooklyn.

NWS has issued a Flood Watch for the NYC Metro from tonight through Saturday evening. 1-2” of rain is expected, with locally higher amounts up to 4” possible. Excessive runoff may result in flooding especially in poor drainage or low lying areas.

a whole generation of audio folks are unemployed, and maybe looking at leaving the industry, and yet all around things are looking better. really hard to feel this disconnect.
Sometimes you need to take a step back: +2.7 million more people are employed now v. year ago. Wage growth has cooled: 4.2% y/y now v. 5.1% year ago. (But inflation also down: 3.7% now vs. 8.2% year ago.) Almost no one predicted this good news story. #jobs

“It is clear to me that we will have more flood issues like this in the future and the DOE doesn’t have any flood plans in place." As NYC flooded, Eric Adams ordered schools to shelter in place. No one told principals, via @ChalkbeatNY. ny.chalkbeat.org/2023/10/2/2…

As city officials urged New Yorkers to stay home in pummeling rains, migrants whose 60-days had run out were still forced out of a Bushwick shelter, just the same. "Give us until the morning. But no...We were here for 2 months, why not one more night?” thecity.nyc/2023/9/29/238964…

The NYC flood situation was very well modeled by our hires tools. Not sure what the messaging was the decision makers or how it was acted on but there certainly was a solid 24-hour heads up for a significant event in our guidance.
A concerning look on our high-res models this morning. With lots of moisture, an upper level low closing off just south of us, and an inverted trough developing there's the possibility of excessive rainfall. The location of heaviest rain/flooding is uncertain (NJ, NY, or CT).

Concerned that these downpours will sit over portions of New York City (especially Brooklyn and Queens) for many more hours to come based on the High Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) guidance. #abc7ny

There are so many media outlets in this city: radio stations, television stations, platforms besides this one to broadcast emergency information. Why didn't the NYC use all of them?
