ALT Post from forums user Tunicate, on the complexities of Dwarf Fortress: "Adventurer mode has the option of playing as a historical figure. This worked fine, but had a few bugs when Toady introduced minf qnd soul mechanics. If you played as a historical figure, everyone who knew the player character before rhat point would immediately recognize that they were being possessed, and wouldn't treat them normally. Toady patched that bug. The other one was found later and a bit more subtle. A player noticed that his adventurer had a coating of tears on their eyes after battle. After some community experimentation, Toady confirmed the bug - when posessing an adventurer, control was supplanted by the player. But the mind and emotions of the original historical character still existed and were still reacting to what was happening. Puppeteered by an outside force, unable to move an inch or stop the killing, they could only cry."
