Lots of folks are trying to figure out what generative AI means for teaching. Catherine Yeh and I wrote a little piece to help demystify and provide sociological context. It will be out in Contexts soon(ish), but until then, the preprint is here. osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/bq…

🧵In Houston, freeway widening will demolish hundreds of homes in the primarily Black & Latino neighborhoods Independence Hts. & Near Northside, building on decades of the gov't using highway construction to segregate cities & destroy communities of color. nytimes.com/interactive/2022…

Boston 2024's boosters often talked about London 2012 as a model, despite it going billions of dollars over budget. A decade after the Games, it's clear that London 2012 was also a failure as an exercise in city planning and building. theguardian.com/uk-news/2022… #mapoli

Your annual reminder that Dr. King believed in guaranteed universal basic income that gave all people a dignified life, guaranteed housing for all, guaranteed access to a high quality education, & said that “no one should be forced to live in poverty while others live in luxury.”

This rule was an unjust attack on our right to organize, plain and simple. GENU members joined grad unions across the country in submitting public comments and holding events to prevent it from being enacted, and on March 15th we will have officially succeeded! #WeAreWorkers #1u
In Columbia University, the Board correctly held that student employees are workers deserving the full protection of our labor laws. The withdrawal of this proposed rule will ensure that student workers can continue to join together to pursue better wages and working conditions.

Interrupting your doomscrolling with more good news. As most had expected, the vaccines continue to work well against the new variants. Our problem remains producing enough of these amazing vaccines and getting them out there in arm. They are so good that we have a lot of buffer.
Replying to @KizzyPhD
The neutralization teams have a message: "Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Retains Neutralizing Activity Against Emerging Variants First Identified in the U.K. and the Republic of South Africa" Sorry to those who I've been ignoring yin this regard for weeks lol teapawt.net/moderna_tx/status/1353…

This is what I mean when I say that @UNFCCC negotiations have largely been a failure. Progress on climate change has to come from action not the proliferation of documents. – at Philadelphia, PA
For me the big point of inflection on climate will be when this curve stops going up exponentially.

It’s impossible to fully convey the rage I feel when I think about the fact that there are over 500 children who were stripped away from their parents at the border and now haven’t seen them in years. I look at my two kids, imagining if it were them, and I almost want to explode.

*Naming* that group rather than sticking to generic "white supremacists" is terrible turning point. It's direct-to-Google instructions to them. Yes, it matters. Ideologies don't coalesce by themselves, but in social interactions, groups, and through these amplification processes.

It's 4 years since Rio2016. LA is not Rio—at surface level their Olympics will look very different. But if we ask what kind of city is constructed through the Olympic project, the similarities start to stack up. knock-la.com/from-rio-to-la-… @ComitePopularRJ @NOlympicsLA @RioOnWatch

White people in academia! Read this along with #BlackintheIvory. It’s a privilege to not have a story like the ones Black scholars are sharing and to not face constant confrontations about our right to be here. Racism pervades academia and its time we step up and confront it. – at Philadelphia, PA

How to save higher ed? My view is we need to tax for education, re-establish higher ed as a public good, and understand that colleges and universities are thoroughly woven into the economy, and should be leveraged for economic policy: nytimes.com/2020/06/05/opini…
