The United Nations @UN has launched its first system-wide toolbox designed to ensure that people, rather than machines, remain accountable for public decisions in smart cities in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).
AI is already at work in city halls around the world: chatbots answer residents, algorithms select roads to repair, software drives administrative decisions. While such applications can make city services more responsive, they can also introduce risks related to bias, privacy, human rights and accountability.
The new United for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC) Toolbox for People-Centred Smart Cities in the AI Era, issued by the International Telecommunication Union (@ITU) and UN Human Settlements Programme (@UNHabitat), gives mayors, city managers and policymakers real-world guidance for deciding how AI can improve public services, what safeguards are needed, and when the technology should not be used.
โSmart, sustainable cities are defined by how well people benefit from technology designed to improve everyday living," said Doreen Bogdan-Martin, ITU Secretary-General. โThe U4SSC toolbox helps city officials turn international standards and responsible AI principles into guidance for better public services and lasting trust."
The U4SSC resource provides the tools to support mayors, city managers and urban practitioners to advance from fragmented digital projects to sustainable urban transformation by harnessing digital technologies and encouraging global collaboration for smarter cities.
โArtificial intelligence and digital innovation must help cities better respond to the needs of communities, especially those living in informal settlements and other underserved areas," said UN-Habitat's Executive Director Anaclรกudia Rossbach. โThis means addressing gaps in data, protecting human rights and ensuring that residents and civil society meaningfully participate in shaping urban decisions."

Zambia's payments landscape is evolving rapidly. The opportunity now is to move beyond access to digital payments towards everyday use, expanding merchant acceptance, enabling small businesses to participate more fully in the digital economy and building trust through secure, reliable payment experiences.
This was central to discussions at @Visa Connect Zambia, bringing together leaders from banks, fintechs, government and regulatory bodies to explore how to build an inclusive, secure payments ecosystem that supports growth.
โConsumer payments dominate digitization so far, but many of the biggest gains in efficiency and growth sit in business-to-business and commercial flows,โ says Salome Makau, Group Country Manager for Visa Central Southern Africa. โMany Zambian businesses still rely on cash, and manual reconciliation for supplier payments, payroll and procurement, bringing delays, limited visibility and higher costs, especially for SMEs that work on thin margins.โ
The event also recognized the institutions who are already driving Zambia's payments evolution. The winners are:
- Cross-Border Champion: @FNBZambia, for the largest contribution to cross-border payments and international commerce at scale.
- Digital Commerce Champion: @AbsaZambia, for leadership in e-commerce, merchant payments, digital acceptance and seamless digital payment experiences.
- Growth Champion: @IndoZambiaBank, for exceptional business growth and market momentum.
- Financial Inclusion Award: @ZanacoPLC, for the greatest contribution to expanding access to digital financial services.
- Trusted Payments Excellence Award: @StanbicBankZM, for secure, reliable and trusted payment experiences across payment performance, operational resilience, risk management and authorization effectiveness.
- Payments Ecosystem Leadership Award: Absa Bank Zambia, for leadership in ecosystem development through fintech partnerships, BIN sponsorships, co-brand initiatives and collaboration.
- Visa Collaborative Partner of the Year: ZANACO, for consistently strong partnership with Visa, including early adoption of Visa campaigns, products, capabilities and market initiatives.
- Business & Commercial Growth Award: FNB Zambia, for outstanding leadership in advancing business and commercial payments. The bank delivered the highest commercial payment volume and market share, generated the largest absolute increase in business spend, and kept growing its customer base, helping businesses digitize payments and take part more fully in the digital economy.
- Acquirer of the Year: Absa Bank Zambia, for leadership in merchant acquiring, acceptance expansion, merchant payment growth and digital commerce.
- Issuer of the Year: FNB Zambia, for the strongest overall issuing performance.

Behind every AI solution, digital service and cloud platform is infrastructure that makes it possible. But is Africa investing enough in the systems needed to support its digital future?
At Africa Tech-Xpo 2026, Geoff Hardwick, Commercial Lead at Paratus Zambia, addressed this question in his presentation, โInfrastructure Readiness for Data Sovereignty & AI.โ
With 16 years of operations in Zambia and a 1MW data centre launched in 2021, Paratus is contributing to the country's growing digital infrastructure ecosystem.
Geoff highlighted why data sovereignty, security and quality must be central to AI adoption. Organisations need to know where their data is stored, who controls it and how it is protected. Just as importantly, AI solutions need reliable, well-managed data to deliver meaningful results.
He also explored the role of data centres and infrastructure providers in giving businesses access to secure hosting, reliable connectivity and the capabilities needed to support emerging technologies.
The bigger message? Africa cannot build its AI future on ambition alone. It needs investment in the infrastructure that will power innovation, protect data and enable businesses to compete.
Through its telecommunications and data centre capabilities, Paratus is part of this important conversation about building a stronger digital foundation for Zambia and the continent.

AI adoption requires more than access to technology. It needs computing infrastructure, local expertise and solutions that address real challenges.
At Africa Tech-Xpo 2026, Nampaka Nkumbula, @timbuktooafrica Coordinator - Zambia, and Rachel Volk, AI Assistant, timbuktoo EDGE, presented on the timbuktoo Initiative in Zambia, highlighting @UNDPZambiaโs Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence and Innovation (DAI) work.
The pan-African initiative aims to strengthen innovation ecosystems and support startups through four pillars: UniPods, Venture Funds, Tech Hubs and the timbuktoo Policy and Innovation Unit.
A key focus was timbuktoo EDGE, which provides local AI computing infrastructure to help African innovators develop and scale solutions for local challenges.
The presentation highlighted how Zambia can connect this infrastructure with universities, researchers, startups and public institutions to make AI more accessible and support homegrown innovation.
One example explored was the potential use of AI to analyse water utility data, identify patterns in non-revenue water and help prioritise interventions. This was presented as a possible pilot, not an implemented solution.
The broader message was that Africa must build AI around its own data, expertise and priorities, while ensuring responsible use and meaningful benefits for communities.
Through initiatives such as timbuktoo EDGE, Zambia has an opportunity to connect infrastructure with local talent and turn innovation into practical solutions.

Artificial intelligence is changing how we work, learn and do business. But as AI becomes part of everyday operations, an important question remains: are our people equipped with the skills to participate in this changing economy?
This was the focus of a panel discussion, โPreparing Africaโs Workforce for the AI Era,โ at Africa Tech-Xpo 2026.
The discussion brought together Winston Ritson, Founder of Ritson.ai; Rebecca Lupyani, Head of Department for Computer Science, IT and Cybersecurity at @_Unilus ; and Violet @NswanaKaponda, CEO of Avec Technologies.
The panellists explored how AI is reshaping jobs and industries, the skills African workers need to remain competitive, and how education institutions and businesses can prepare for the future of work.
A key issue was whether universities and training institutions are keeping pace with the changing demands of employers. Preparing graduates for an AI-driven workplace requires more than technical skills such as coding and data science. It also means developing the competencies needed to work effectively alongside AI.
The discussion also highlighted the role of employers and technology companies in closing the skills gap through practical training, internships, mentorship and stronger partnerships with universities.
For young Africans, AI presents opportunities to build businesses, improve productivity and compete for opportunities beyond their local markets. However, the transition must be inclusive.
Concerns around job displacement and unequal access to AI training underline the importance of ensuring that women, young people and underserved communities are not left behind.
The takeaway was clear: preparing Africa for the AI era requires more than adopting new technology. It calls for continuous learning, relevant education, investment in people and stronger collaboration between industry, academia and policymakers.
Africa must not simply prepare its workforce to adapt to the future of work. It must equip its people to actively shape it.

The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (@ZictaZM) has revoked @ZedMOfficial's network licence, effective September 15, 2026, citing persistent regulatory, operational and financial compliance failures.
ZICTA said ZedMobile, which launched commercial operations in 2024, has consistently failed to meet key conditions attached to its licence.
The regulator cited failures to meet required network roll-out and service obligations, prescribed coverage and quality-of-service requirements, as well as concerns over the companyโs financial capacity to sustain operations.
ZICTA issued ZedMobile with a notice of intention to cancel its licence on August 31, 2026. The company subsequently made representations to the Authority on September 10.
However, following an assessment of the submissions and a technical review of ZedMobileโs current operational status, ZICTA said the representations were not satisfactory.
The cancellation has been made under Section 18(1)(b) and (g) of the Information and Communication Technologies Act, Chapter 159 of the Laws of Zambia.
With the licence cancelled, ZedMobile is no longer authorised to operate telecommunications services.
ZICTA said it will also withdraw resources allocated to the operator, including numbering blocks and radio frequency spectrum, while pursuing outstanding regulatory fees and other liabilities.
The Authority has also highlighted consumer protection as a key priority following the cancellation.
ZICTA said it will work with relevant stakeholders to ensure consumer obligations are addressed, including facilitating refunds where applicable and managing outstanding liabilities.
Further guidance on the process for affected consumers is expected to be communicated by the Authority.
