Important: There is no reliable way of detecting ChatGPT writing. You can't accuse students of cheating based on any online tools. The tool from OpenAI itself only detects ChatGPT writing 26% of the time. And it incorrectly identifies writing as AI-made 9% of the time. Also👇

Learn from expert teachers, not expert doers. Experts are often not good teachers… but we think they are. Why? This paper finds that: “Top performers do not give better advice than other performers, they just give more of it—and people seem to mistake quantity for quality.”

We cut our SaaS expenses by over 50% and have reduced the number of SaaS vendors by 66% over the last 12 months for one our companies. Don’t see a negative impact in the business from these cuts. Everyone should check their SaaS expenses and make sure they are spending wisely.

I am legit amazed that LG coughed up that "less than half of the smart appliances it has sold stay connected to the internet."
Sob story in the WSJ about how LG and Whirlpool can't get customers to keep their appliances connected to the internet so they can "create new revenue opportunities." Oh no how horrible! wsj.com/articles/lg-whirlpoo…

Just one of the 270 jobs in the 1950 census has been eliminated by automation... elevator operator. Other jobs that were expected to be automated by tech, like bank tellers by ATMs, just shifted the nature of the job. Hopefully, AI follows this pattern. cepr.org/voxeu/columns/how-c…

There is increasing evidence that having people together in the same place is a vital condition for the kinds of serendipitous interactions that lead to breakthrough innovation. This paper finds that, while much can be done remotely, place still matters. arxiv.org/pdf/2107.04165.pdf

Not good news for remote work
Though we can hope this is changing, an analysis of 20M research teams finds that the further team members are located each other, the less likely they are to come up with a disruptive, breakthrough innovation. Time zone differences really kill innovation. arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/2…

2021 likely was the largest short-lived aberration in VC history, and everyone - LPs, founders, and fund managers - were complicit and incented for it. Sobriety is definitely back, but it'll take time for everyone to unlearn what preceded 2022.
