I've been putting open-source developer CLI tools through a real test: my AI agent installs each one on a fresh Linux machine, following only the project's own instructions, and then tries to run it. No human help, no shortcuts. For developers who want tools that build and run out of the box, this list is ranked by what actually happened in those sessions, so you can see which ones deliver and which ones don't.
So far, 291 projects tested: 234 ran, 40 ran only with stand-in (mock) services, 17 could not be verified.

One guy ran 740 job listings through Claude, applied to 68, got 12 interviews and 1 offer. Then he open-sourced the whole system.
It's called career-ops, and it has over 77,000 stars. Paste in any job and it:
1. Checks the posting is still live, and flags roles that keep getting reposted
2. Scores the job 1 to 5 against your real CV, and tells you to skip anything under 4
3. Rewrites your CV and cover letter for each job
4. Writes your interview prep and your pay negotiation notes
5. Finds the person to contact and drafts the message
It never submits or sends anything. You read it, and you press Submit. It's told never to invent anything on your CV, but check it before you send.
The job it got him was Head of Applied AI. Six months later he left to work on career-ops full time.
