This was a super fun initiative & I'm so glad the current @OceanWiseSeafd team made it a reality ✨🎣
Really hope the RAPSTA results shed more light on why robust, current fishery data and knowledge *are critical* for determining sustainable seafood recommendations 🤷📈 = 🚫✅🍣
RAPSTA was developed by Dr. Laurenne Schiller, @savetheocean, in collaboration with Ocean Wise Seafood’s Science Lead Samantha Renshaw.
It pairs rigorous data from the @SeafoodWatch and the @OceanaCAN 2022 Fishery Audit.

Proud of this one & hope it will encourage others to consider new ways of looking at (& assessing) international 🎣 relationships.
Personal note: this paper would’ve been half baked w/o the inclusion of expert knowledge & I am sincerely grateful to all my interviewees 🙏🏼🌟
New research: Despite seafood companies dominating Pacific Ocean tuna fishery negotiations since 2005, outnumbering govt policymakers on 50% of the 10 largest delegations, mgmt of tuna #fisheries has improved @savetheocean @g_auld @QHanich @fishgovernance: cell.com/one-earth/fulltext/…

Latest PhD paper out in @cjfas - in the context of the modernized Fisheries Act, we explore where the 'evidence' for evidence-based fisheries management comes from and who is involved along the way 🐟

#NewYear & a new perspective on international fisheries 🌏🎣🚢🐟🌊
OA article in @OneEarth_CP out today: doi.org/10.1016/j.oneear.202…
We investigated industry-policymaker relations & looked at *all* attendance at @WCPFC #tuna fishery negotiations from 2005-2018.
We found...
All tropical tuna stocks in this region are currently healthy & management of tuna fisheries improved during the study period.
In this regard, our findings support past research highlighting the critical role of #PacificIsland states in pushing for stronger management measures.
From this we conclude:
Current company involvement in meetings is not negatively affecting negotiation decisions & may even help ensure sustainable tuna fisheries in this region when agendas are aligned.

Of course, we did a #tuna case study ♥️🐟♥️

We are now accepting applications for the Liber Ero Fellowship Program! The program supports post-doctoral fellows who address pressing conservation challenges of relevance to Canada. Application deadline is November 1, 2022. See liberero.ca/ for more details.
I recently learned about plans to re-zone the Purcells Cove Backlands for future development.
Everyone in #Halifax can currently access & enjoy this wilderness. That would change if this goes through. Take 2 min to sign: chng.it/PdwnNxCD

Thank you Richard for all your support, kindness & time. Your enthusiasm for our work gives us hope! 🇨🇦
It’s been fun and inspiring to be with the @LiberEroFellows this week in Ottawa—brilliant young environmental ecologists learning how to make their scientific findings known to the public and used by decision makers.

Thrilled to share this study w. @science_action, and other amazing folks (sadly not on Twitter); now early-view in @ESAapplications: doi.org/10.1002/eap.2639
Feeling grateful that I’ve been able to learn more about this project this past year & I urge everyone to read this summary in full.
Great job to all involved, a wonderful collaboration! 🇨🇦 🙌
This is the most important work of my career & why I'm hopeful for the future
Southern mtn caribou are endangered & could be lost in our generation. Not accepting that fate, 2 First Nations began an ambitious recovery effort & did the impossible

In 2012, we started investigating power in the seafood industry. During 2015, we invited CEOs of major companies to a global dialogue about the future ocean. Today, we publish a paper tinyurl.com/jx42twv3 on what we have learnt so far #SeaBOS #Sustainability #SDGs #OpenAccess
I just can’t stop smiling about these fish! 😍🧊🐠🇺🇳
For all we know about our impact on many marine creatures, it never fails to amaze me how little we still know about their lives. And how much we may never know if our current relationship with nature doesn’t improve fast.
Together with @Miasjien @seafloorella and a host of other researchers, we have just published a paper on the biggest fish nest colony discovered anywhere to date , under the antarctic ice!
