Climate change is increasingly interacting w/ global biodiversity loss, water stress, food insecurity, pathogens & geopol. instability, amplifying risks across interconnected human &natural systems. Yet the gap btwn scientific understanding & societal response continues to widen.
🌍 “This is no longer a warning for the future; it is a diagnosis of the present.” Our 2026 State of the Climate report finds 7 of 16 planetary vital signs at record extremes. The planetary emergency is already here. doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biag1…

A thoroughly researched article from Politico on one of the major climate risks: the linked tipping points of the subpolar gyre #SPG and the #AMOC in the Atlantic. SPG collapse could occur within 20 the next years. politico.eu/article/climate-…

Germany’s march to fascism is totally normalised on polite breakfast TV. The extremist AfD is “mainstream”; the actual mainstream left is “extremist.” Capitalism in crisis would prefer the far-right in power than concede even the prospect of the mildest social-democratic reform

If you want to understand the priorities of Germany’s political establishment, look at what happened this month. The far-right AfD won almost 44% in Saxony-Anhalt. Two weeks later, it won 38.2% in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Then, on the very same night as that second AfD victory, Die Linke won Berlin with 25.7% - campaigning on rents, inequality and the socialisation of hundreds of thousands of homes owned by large real-estate corporations. And suddenly, much of Germany’s political debate has become consumed by Die Linke and accusations of antisemitism. The Google Trends graph offers one preliminary indication of where attention shifted after election night: searches for “Antisemitismus” overtook searches for “AfD Mecklenburg-Vorpommern”. What we are witnessing is a desperate attempt of the establishment to smear Die Linke by weaponising antisemitism. It is something the German establishment has been relentlessly doing over the last 3 years, to shield itself, as well as, Israel from accountability for war crimes and the genocide in Gaza. After all, Germany and the US still supply 99% of the weapons to Israel. Since the left’s victory in Berlin, allegations of antisemitism have rapidly become a central issue in Berlin’s #coalition debate. Meanwhile, the right wing AfD, that has just received nearly four in ten votes in another German state continues its march into the political mainstream. There is another issue that should not disappear behind this debate: housing and economic power. Die Linke is demanding implementation of Berlin’s 2021 referendum to socialise the housing stock of major corporate landlords. CDU (conservatives) opposes the policy, while SPD (centre-left) has proposed a substantially different approach. A government excluding Die Linke - potentially CDU, SPD and Greens - is mathematically possible. When a left-wing party wins the capital on a programme challenging landlords and concentrated economic power, enormous political energy is devoted to smearing it. There is a profound contradiction at the heart of all this: Germany’s establishment turns its fire on the Left in the name of fighting antisemitism, while a far-right party with a track record of antisemitic and racist rhetoric surges towards the political mainstream - threatening Jewish, Muslim, LGBTQI+ and other minorities. When the far right takes power at the national level, remember who Germany’s political establishment chose to spend its political capital fighting.

In response to the absolute shitstorm of antisemitism accusations being flung at the Berlin Left Party following its election win, 150 Jewish Berliners declare their solidarity with the party and call for a red-red-green coalition (LP, SDP, Greens). taz.de/Richtungsstreit-nach-…

Freshwater fish populations have collapsed by a staggering 81%. This dramatic decline is emerging as one of the most severe, yet often overlooked, wildlife crises on Earth, with serious consequences for both river ecosystems and global food security. According to a major 2024 global assessment, migratory freshwater fish populations plummeted by an average of 81% between 1970 and 2020. This collapse is happening far faster than declines in terrestrial or marine wildlife. The main culprits are human-made barriers such as dams and weirs that block ancient migration routes, combined with pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. These fish play a critical role in maintaining the health of rivers and wetlands. Their disappearance disrupts entire ecosystems, affecting everything from nutrient cycling to the survival of other species. For millions of people in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, migratory fish are also a vital source of nutrition and livelihood. Their decline directly threatens food security and local economies. The good news? Recovery is still possible. Successful conservation efforts (including the removal of obsolete dams, the creation of effective fish passages, and the protection of free-flowing rivers) have already shown promising results in restoring fish populations and river health. The challenge now is to act quickly and at scale before these vital freshwater systems cross a point of no return. [World Wildlife Fund. (2026). Living Planet Report 2025: A System in Peril. Humanity is speeding towards a climate catastrophe. That’s the stark warning from the latest @UNEP report. Every fraction of a degree of warming will cost lives, deepen inequalities & push ecosystems closer to irreversible damage. We must raise ambition, accelerate #ClimateAction & fight for humanity. 🚨 No more sugarcoating. The UN just confirmed the 1.5°C climate limit is effectively dead. We will breach it within years, not decades. We are officially entering a dangerous "overshoot" era. Current policies track us to a lethal 2.6°C. What does crossing 1.5°C actually mean? It means a massive surge in compounding weather disasters. We aren't just talking about hotter days, as we are looking at abrupt, unpredictable severe droughts, collapsing ice sheets, and extreme floods happening all at once. It gets worse. Rising sea levels will trigger permanent coastal submersion, threatening to completely swallow island nations. Simultaneously, brutal severe droughts will collapse global crop yields, causing skyrocketing food prices and widespread shortages. We are completely unprepared.

“Overshoot, peak and decline” strategy looks like our best shot now that 1.5° of warming is baked in. But even that requires massive urgent action & committment that no world leaders are providing. What's it going to take to turn this thing around? theguardian.com/environment/…

Our new media alert is now out: 4 Billion Dead: ‘There Are No Words’ If you need an indication of how divorced the ‘mainstream’ media is from reality, consider this: the possibility of at least 4 billion deaths resulting from 3 degrees Celsius of global warming by 2050 made barely a dent in news headlines. medialens.substack.com/p/4-b…
