Aw, @NZXT didn't include our testimonial in their new ad campaign. "NZXT Flex is a predatory scam that preys on the vulnerable and desperate."

I finally took a break. It's rare that I feel like I've actually taken a break. Vacations don't usually count. You can go on vacations and feel exhilarated, but not really relaxed. Since I started Linking Your Thinking in the summer of 2020, it's felt like a nonstop sprint—especially because at the beginning I was working full-time as a TV editor while moonlighting LYT (moonLYTing hehe). And I was going hard before the pandemic. From 2016 to 2020, I was working hard enter the entertainment industry, starting out as a lowly production assistant, before finishing as a TV editor. In the past year, I've started to find more time for small breaks, usually in the form of weekend retreats with others. But still, not just by myself. Why is it so hard to firmly schedule time just to be with ourselves? Well, last month, I've been on a major break. I didn't respond to much. I haven't done any of the things I've grown accustom to doing. No tweets. No YouTube vids. I even skipped a weekly newsletter (don't tell anyone)! One reason, was that I got sick, again. I've been getting sick more often. Hmm, that might be a signal. Sure, I'm not getting younger, but still, I don't like how easily I seem to get sick now. Too much working and too much sitting. So in early June I decided to go on a personal retreat to the mountains. It was supposed to be from Friday to Sunday, but I extended it to Tuesday. It became an epic life audit. I made so many discoveries and recognized so many short-comings in the person I aspire to be. I've come out on the other side refreshed and with clearer intentions. During my retreat, I did many exercises, some of which I'm not ready to share yet. However, yesterday I did just release a new video featuring my Epic Life Audit Obsidian (@obsdmd) Template. It's a free downloadable template meant to be used with Obsidian. I hope it helps you as much as it did for me. Get the template and follow along here » youtu.be/o9811FmW21A?list=PL…

Subscriptions headache is real I killed a startup by swapping one-time payments for recurring ones. Monthly passive income is good for business owners only. Users are much more reluctant to subscriptions. Start with one-time payments. Add subscriptions if there’s a demand.

File over app File over app is a philosophy: if you want to create digital artifacts that last, they must be files you can control, in formats that are easy to retrieve and read. Use tools that give you this freedom. File over app is an appeal to tool makers: accept that all software is ephemeral, and give people ownership over their data. In the fullness of time, the files you create are more important than the tools you use to create them. Apps are ephemeral, but your files have a chance to last. The pyramids of Egypt contain hieroglyphs that were chiseled in stone thousands of years ago. The ideas hieroglyphs convey are more important than the type of chisel that was used to carve them. The world is filled with ideas from generations past, transmitted through many mediums, from clay tablets to manuscripts, paintings, sculptures, and tapestries. These artifacts are objects that you can touch, hold, own, store, preserve, and look at. To read something written on paper all you need is eyeballs. Today, we are creating innumerable digital artifacts, but most of these artifacts are out of our control. They are stored on servers, in databases, gated behind an internet connection, and login to a cloud service. Even the files on your hard drive use proprietary formats that make them incompatible with older systems. Paraphrasing something I wrote recently: > If you want your writing to still be readable on a computer from the 2060s or 2160s, it’s important that your notes can be read on a computer from the 1960s. You should want the files you create to be durable, not only for posterity, but also for your future self. You never know when you might want to go back to something you created years or decades ago. Don’t lock your data into a format you can’t retrieve. These days I write using an app I help make called Obsidian (@obsdmd), but it’s a delusion to think it will last forever. The app will eventually become obsolete. It’s the plain text files I create that are designed to last. Who knows if anyone will want to read them besides me, but future me is enough of an audience to make it worthwhile.

If you’re wondering who to blame for the right to repair bill in NY getting watered down, you can start with the members of TechNet, one of the main lobby groups in opposition to repair: technet.org/our-story/member…
New: Gov. Hochul has signed the “right to repair” law — with the Legislature agreeing to a number of changes, as outlined in her approval message.

Wow, to put our NY #RightToRepair bill in context, @RussHaven1 sent me the lobbying records for it. 48 pages. Apple, Google and TechNet all there, as well as the huge hired gun lobby firm Multistate Associates. @Google -- thought u said u were going to st0p lobbying on this?

How do I know Amazon fulfills pirated copies? I clicked on the “Buy Now” button and bought them. One had similar content but with a different layout and was printed on inferior quality paper. My book has 309 pages: the pirated one only 276 pages and a completely different ISBN.

I'm the author of the best-selling book System Design Interview-An Insider’s Guide. 11 days ago, two fraudsters hijacked the "Buy Now" button on Amazon, fulfilling all orders with a different book. I'm helpless to do anything. A sad story on self-publishing: a thread.
