Oh good lord. When will control of the arts be removed from censorious gatekeeping morons. It's so infuriating. We need to build something away from these tedious mediocrities. Endless sanctimony.

Writing something about the importance of a free press. As you'd expect, a stunning array of profound quotes from American leaders and writers through the ages. Struggling to find any by Irish leaders or writers. Very different people.

Our Manuscript of the Week is the Book of O'Lees (RIA MS 23 P 10 (ii)). It is a 15th C Irish translation of a 10th C Arabic medical text by Ibn Jazlah. This Irish translation was probably made from a 13th Latin translation by Faraj ibn Salim that had appeared in print by 1532.

It should be of keen interest to the UK media @BBCNews @guardian @SkyNews @itvnews @Telegraph @thetimes and certainly to cricket bodies like @ECB_cricket and @ICC that every woman raising her hand to object to the inclusion of the Taliban Afghan team in the Champions Trophy receives abuse/death threats/rape threats/character assassination and outright lies about their lives. Not only are these men ignoring the abuse of women in Afghanistan - but the women supporting them. It stinks. It’s evil. It’s shameful. All of those men staying silent including @englandcricket players are complicit in the abuse or they MUST speak out. These are dangerous and coordinated men - backing up a regime of pure evil. Women will not back down because the women of Afghanistan need us - but we can see you. We know you are looking away from this targeted abuse of women.

Extraordinary opening to the assisted suicide committee, so testy that the chair had to intervene. Before the committee was closed to the public we learnt:
—Motion to sit without public scrutiny was only proposed last night without explanation
—Kim Leadbeater’s reasoning is “respecting individuals’ privacy” (no further explanation)
—Leadbeater sent round her witness selection last week, and then changed it; committee only told the changes at 10am today
—Proposed witnesses include 8 supporters from other jurisdictions, 0 opponents
—Of 9 lawyers, 6 in favour, 3 neutral, 0 against
—No witnesses from disability organisations

They want to tear down our statue of Joan of Arc we put one year of blood, sweat and tears to achieve.
So, before talking about Make Europe Great Again, you should understand what's the real problem here in France.
After a year of hard work, exhausting our bodies to build this statue of Joan of Arc, meant to revive a spark of hope, it took one bitter bureaucrat to wipe out our efforts with a single stamp.
Our civilization is dying, and every citizen who rises up is facing a pile of paperwork to put them right back in their place.
We live in a gray world, without dreams or destiny. But our world wasn’t always like this.
Hundred years ago, we built the Eiffel Tower. Back then, we showed the world what Humanity was capable of, when Art and Technology walked hand in hand. We promised the world that tomorrow would be better than today.
But that world was too beautiful; it kept bitter souls from staring at themselves in the mirror. So they pulled off a coup: they convinced themselves that beauty didn’t exist. And thus, they extinguished every glimmer of light to plunge us into a gray world, without dreams or destiny.
In this night, saddened by the sight of barbarians destroying statues to exist, our sculpture atelier was born.
This statue of Joan of Arc represents that little girl who rose from nothing to be the leader of the French army. It's the one that gave men courage when, after wars, rebuilding was needed. It’s the one holding her sword by the blade, wounding herself so as not to harm others. This is the statue they want to take down.
Irony of the story: lamenting the lack of competition in creating this statue, the Resentful now want us dead, the last atelier in France capable of building such a beautiful statue.
If these same souls hadn’t devoted themselves to destroying every trace of beauty in this world, they might have found multiples workshop for a fair Request for proposals !
This statue belongs to the people. It remind them about the constellation of the dead, watching over us. And those stars bear witness to this statue’s destiny.
Our atelier, over the course of a year, gave its all to create this statue. Our work is finished, and now, this statue belongs to the people. But if we do nothing, it will be tear down.
The time has come to fight, to save this statue and more importantly, to restore hope! We must fight!

Extended tweet explaining who was really behind the notorious islamophobia definition signed off by MPs, why it must be shelved … and highlighting senior voices in the muslim community who bravely challenged it:
•••
One of the reasons the grooming scandal was able to continue for so long with impunity is that so many arms of the British establishment were paralysed with fear of being called ‘islamophobic’ if they blew the whistle. How did the term ‘islamophobia’ become so weaponised as to cause complete institutional seizure?
The answer is that it didn’t happen by accident. In recent days there has been heightened interest in the work of a grouping of British MPs who took it upon themselves to define and then advocate for the adoption of a new definition of Islamophobia. The work was done a by the ‘APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) on Islamophobia’ which became the APPG on British Muslims.
The report is here: static1.squarespace.com/stat…
One of the reasons this report has come to public attention again is because it includes this chilling line: “The recourse to the notion of free speech and a supposed right to criticise Islam results in nothing more than another subtle form of anti-Muslim racism, whereby the criticism humiliates, marginalises and stigmatises Muslims. One real-life example of this concerns the issue of “grooming gangs”.” In other words, blowing the whistle on the grooming gangs is islamophobic.
When the report was released the Labour Party immediately endorsed it, followed by numerous Councils. Anyone opposed was accused of being ‘islamophobic’.
But the report and definition are far from neutral, and even though it was portrayed as a protective shield for all muslims at a time of heightened anti-muslim activity, it was harshly rejected by a wide range of leading moderate muslim voices.
It was even condemned by the General Secretary of the world’s largest Muslim organisation, Nahdlatul Ulama, who responded to the campaign by saying: “There is a desperate need for honest discussion of these matters... We appeal to people on both sides of the political divide in the West, of all faiths and none, to renounce the practice of weaponising Islam for partisan advantage.”
An open letter to the Home Secretary, signed by a long list of equality campaigners – most of them muslim – said; “The government must resist growing pressure to adopt a definition of Islamophobia. This proposal would render legitimate comment about Islam beyond the bounds of reasonable public debate. A commitment to tackle the real and pressing problem of anti-Muslim bigotry should not, and need not, infringe on the basic right to speak freely.”
Professor and political advisor @Ed_Husain warned; “Our politicians cannot submit to the collectivist victimhood narrative of Islamists: this does a disservice to Britain, our liberty, and ordinary British Muslims.”
Leading anti racism campaigners joined the criticism. Trevor Philips, the former chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, wrote; “the adoption of this definition would be a grave mistake... I fear that [the MPs] have been persuaded to recommend a course that far from supporting the integration of British Muslims will isolate them...”
Sir John Jenkins, a career diplomat and leading middle east expert said; “Should the Government accept this highly partial definition, which reflects an agenda unrepresentative of the expressed concerns of many, if not most, British Muslims, they would risk endangering free speech, press freedom and open the door to an assault on current counter-extremism policy.”
More recently Middle Eastern author, analyst and researcher @Amjadt25 tweeted: "If you look into the forces demanding that Britain outlaws Islamophobia, you find the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood, an anti-western global movement dedicated to destroying Israel and removing all Arab and Muslim governments; an organisation that is openly homophobic and misogynistic. Islamists are banned in Mecca but operate freely today in Britain. And they specialise in using the equalities agenda to demand the means to pursue, defame and (ideally) prosecute their critics.”
Supporters of the APPG definition sought to dismiss such criticism as ‘islamophobic’. But given the sheer breadth and depth of criticism, that is clearly nonsense.
In fact the report doesn’t provide clarity or specifics about what constitutes islamophobia, but it cites a few examples submitted as evidence, for example “Ofsted questioning the wearing of hijab.” The definition is sufficiently vague that almost any language could qualify as ‘islamophobia’.
We have already seen how that works out. In the recent past, Sara Khan, the lead Commissioner for countering extremism; Maajid Nawaz, the broadcaster and founder of the counter-extremism think tank Quilliam; Amanda Spielman, the head of Ofsted; Sarah Champion, the MP who took up the cause of the victims of child grooming gangs in Rotherham, have all been labelled as islamophobes for the work they do tackling extremism.
The definition would likely also capture the government’s own anti extremism and anti radicalisation programme, Prevent. It is perhaps not a coincidence that some of the loudest voices in support of the definition come from those who label Prevent as “institutionally Islamophobic”.
That is why Maajid Nawaz warned at the time “The Labour Party’s formal adoption of the definition is a victory for Islamists.”
So who was behind the report?
When it came out I tweeted “if you ask supporters of Islamism to write up a definition of islamophobia, you can’t be surprised if they craft it to insulate themselves from scrutiny.”
Anna Soubry who was one of the report’s co-authors responded “Utter tosh. We, MP members of the APPG, took evidence from members of the muslim community throughout the UK and many non muslims.” She went on to declare that she ‘and other MPs like my co-chair Wes Streeting MP wrote the excellent definition of islamophobia.”
Is that really true?
The APPG on Islamophobia’ (formerly the APPG on British Muslims) was run by an organisation called iEngage until reports emerged of it defending extremists and displaying ‘troubling attitudes to antisemitism’. But iEngage didn’t disappear. It became MEND and MEND was closely involved in the islamophobia report. For example, one of the acknowledged contributors is Dr Antonio Perra, who was previously MEND’s senior policy analyst. Perra says he ‘co-edited’ the report. The Islamophobia Response Unit was also involved in the report. It was created by MEND in 2017.
MEND’s record is mixed, to put it mildly. The former Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and head of Counter-Terrorism Command, Sir Mark Rowley, said that MEND was “seeking to undermine the state’s considerable efforts to tackle all hate crime”.
The Jewish Chronicle says of MEND’s former head of community development and engagement “[Azad Ali] never hid some of his other extreme views from the public — such as support for Hamas, a Caliphate, Friday prayers for the Mujahedeen.”
Ali left MEND and joined CAGE, the organisation that made headlines after describing the ISIS militant, Jihadi John, as a ‘beautiful young man.’ CAGE, unsurprisingly heavily promoted the APPG definition.
What is extraordinary is that the MP authors were well aware of controversies surrounding MEND. Soubry even withdrew from a MEND event in Parliament, admitting that the organisation does not “have the best of reputations”after being challenged by the Jewish Chronicle. Streeting said “I have been following the considerable controversy about reported comments by people associated with Mend closely and with serious concern.”
Meanwhile numerous moderate, mainstream voices were not included in the report. Tell Mama for instance, which records and reports anti muslim incidents in the UK, was invited to give evidence only at the very last minute, perhaps to convey a sense of balance. Counter terror organisation Quilliam’s appeals to the APPG were “completely ignored”.
Nowhere in the report is there any mention of Britain’s Ahmadi muslim community. That community faces a double threat – from anti muslim bigots and from islamists who do not believe they are proper muslims. MEND has long had associations with anti-Ahmadi clerics.
So too has the Muslim Council of Britain, which has also actively pushed for adoption of the APPG definition. One of the MCB affiliate groups, Khatm-e-Nubuwwat congratulated all muslims after the murder in 2016 of Ahmadi shopkeeper Asad Shah, who was killed for being Ahmadi.
So why did the MPs on the APPG largely exclude moderate, mainstream voices- in favour of activists with such worrying track records?
Perhaps they were misled into believing radical organisations like MEND and CAGE are genuinely representative of all British muslims. Perhaps they just weren’t paying attention and were happy to sign the work off to ingratiate themselves with a block vote. Whatever the motivation, the MPs did the country and ordinary British muslims a disservice and no responsible political party, government of public body should touch it with a barge pole.

Replying to @Ayaan
Alexander Solzhenitsyn on the future of the West:
”It is with a strange feeling that those of us who come from the Soviet Union look upon the West of today. It is as though we were neither neigbours on the same planet nor contemporaries.
And yet we contemplate the West from what will be your future, or we look back seventy years to see our past suddenly repeating itself today.
And what we see is always the same as it was then; adults defering to the opinion of their children; the younger generation carried away by shallow, wortless ideas; professors scared of being unfashionable; journalists refusing to take responsibility for the words they squander so easily; universal sympathy for revolutionary extremists; people with serious objections unable or unwilling to voice them; the majority passively obsessed by a feeling of doom; feeble governments; societies whose defensive reactions have become paralyzed; spiritual confusion leading to political upheaval.
What will happen as a result of all this lies ahead of us. But the time is near, and from bitter memory we can easily predict what these events will be.”

We are delighted to announce that @Ayaan Hirsi Ali has been voted by our members as the recipient of the Free Speech Union’s ‘Free Speech Hero’ award for 2024 during our End-of-Year Review!
Hirsi Ali is a former politician, bestselling author, women’s rights activist, and an unwavering critic of oppressive Islamic practices, including forced marriage, child marriage, honour killings, and female genital mutilation.
Her nomination for the award came from the FSU’s Director of Data and Impact, Tom Harris. You can watch a clip of his compelling nomination here.
Hirsi Ali’s fearless advocacy for freedom and basic civil liberties has come at great personal cost. She collaborated with filmmaker Theo van Gogh on the short film Submission, which highlighted the plight of women subjected to violence in Islamic societies. Following its release in 2004, van Gogh was brutally murdered by an Islamist extremist, and Hirsi Ali herself became the target of death threats and fatwas. Since then, she has lived under constant threat, requiring 24/7 security protection.
In a 2010 interview with The Guardian, Hirsi Ali reflected on the challenges she faces: “When you live with death threats all the time, you do feel fear and have horrible nightmares. But I have decided not to stop writing, not to stop drawing attention to the plight of Muslim women and the threat that extremists pose to free thought, free speech, and democratic government.”
Through her writings, lectures, and public appearances, Hirsi Ali consistently champions freedom of speech as a cornerstone of liberty and a critical tool in challenging Islamic doctrines and practices that threaten Western society and Enlightenment values.

I love Ireland so much. I want to see her people thrive! Which is why my heart breaks to see Ireland in this death spiral of mediocrity and myopia.
Decades of regulation means there’s no affordable housing for our youth. Driving them abroad. Less youth means less youth culture. And those who leave are the ambitious ones. Which means less entrepreneurship. Nowhere to live, nothing to do, no opportunities. More leave.
Who’s going to do the things that create the growth that creates the prosperity? Well at least we’ve got the social state with the dole and the free education and healthcare. But who’s going to pay for that? We don’t even have our own currency to print anymore. Well at least we’ve got the sweet, sweet American corporate tax revenues. Except the Trump administration's America First agenda is about to stop that in its tracks—and it’s very specifically got Ireland in its crosshairs. And the hapless “diplomacy” with Israel has made us something of a pariah with the new management in the US too, certainly not helping our case.
The above are just a fraction of our problems. Do you think our student union political leaders even understand them, never mind have the fortitude required to address them? I don’t either.
This is a serious downer. I’m sorry. But the first step to addressing such a problem is admitting we have one.
