🔥 New blog post! 🔥 I started writing a tweet about @GitHub’s new comment UI and it somehow turned into a whole 1.7k word article on simplicity, usability, their evolution, and the effects of poor UIs. Minimalist Affordances: Making the right tradeoffs lea.verou.me/blog/2023/minim…

Instead of pouring millions into widening I-65 — which studies show won't alleviate congestion — why not invest in high-speed rail? We can connect communities, reduce traffic, & make AL a leader in sustainable infrastructure. A train to the beach is way better than driving!🚆

I think the thing that's going to be the most difficult is how this will fracture communities on twitter. It's going to be difficult to establish all those connections again.
lol, this was somewhat untimely
The firing of the accessibility team is really indicative of where priorities lie. Accessibility should not be an afterthought for any platform, and it's extremely infuriating to see this happen.

Along with me, my entire engineering team has been let go. Before I get into my own thoughts, I want to honor them. If you are looking to hire some brilliant accessibility engineers, keep reading.

Here’s a recording of how VoiceOver on Firefox announces the credit card number field in the Paddle checkout form (audio on to listen) =)
Using placeholder without a label on the credit card field for example has the screen reader say "kisses kisses kisses kisses" (cz the placeholder is xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx) instead of "credit card number" 😅

I’d love to see a city builder that promotes mixed use cities as opposed to RCI zoning. I think much of what we’ve learned from SimCity is an outdated practice and it would be neat to build cities that are less car dependent.

In retrospect, it’s painfully obvious how American inspired SimCity was, although not surprising.
Electric cars are neat, but I feel like it’s not really solving the issue of having fewer cars, not more. What I’d love to see is a push for more robust public transportation options here in the US. I would never drive a car again if I had any other viable options.

This Amtrack plan looks great. But still suffers from having to yield priority to freight which significantly hinders passenger traffic. media.amtrak.com/amtrak-conn…

I’ve travelled to several different countries with robust transit so I’ve seen what’s possible. I just really want to see a change in infrastructure from car focused to people focused.

The number of board game stores I saw while in Germany made me legitimately giddy. I wish we had that quantity of stores here in the US, I’d much rather support a local shop than something like Amazon.

Apparently they “ran out of rental cars” at the airport. Traveling in Europe was never an issue for us, because it’s not like they ran out of trains.
Every time I travel through Atlanta airport I’m always left with the experience it’s one of the worst modern designed airports.

Psst - the "front-end" is highly dependent on HTML and CSS. You absolutely should hire for those specific skillsets. (And in my experience those are the folks who also care most about accessibility)
