Every cashew you’ve ever eaten has a painful hidden story.
The outer shell of a cashew contains a corrosive liquid (CNSL) that’s chemically related to poison ivy, except it's far more aggressive.
It causes severe chemical burns, blistering, and permanent skin damage on contact. And because of that toxin, almost every cashew on Earth is shelled by hand by low-wage workers (mostly women) in India and Vietnam.
They’re often paid by the pound instead of by the hour, which means skipping or wearing through cheap gloves just to make enough money.
Many end up with lifelong scars and damaged hands. Some have lost fingers from repeated exposure and cuts.
There’s also a documented history of child labor in harvesting and past forced labor in parts of Vietnam’s industry (the infamous “blood cashews” reports).
Even “raw” cashews aren’t truly raw — they’ve all been steamed or roasted to neutralize the toxin. The label is marketing.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Here's what you can actually do to support ethical cashews:
- Look for Fair Trade certified cashews (Equal Exchange, Alter Eco, and several co-op brands are good)
- Seek out cashews from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Mozambique, or Benin: these supply chains tend to have better transparency and working conditions
- Pay the 30–50% premium. That extra cost mostly goes toward protective gear, fair wages, and safer processing.
Most of the food we eat has a human story behind it. This one happens to be as brutal as it is fixable.
Knowing is the first step. Buying better is the second.

Incredible. Well-done Amsterdam!
This week, adverts for meat have been officially banned in Amsterdam. It's great to see recognition of the damage done by intensive animal agriculture to our planet & health. Other cities should follow suit! euronews.com/2026/02/06/amst…

The People’s Summit Declaration integrated some our language! For the 1st time in a global civil society declaration of this scope:
🐄 Animal ag is treated as part of the fossil fuel system
🌍 Methane is linked to ag & land use
🛑 Regenerative grazing is now a false solution

🚨 At the Santa Marta conference on fossil fuel transition, we pushed for a model that is constantly excluded from official negotiations: food systems centered on animal-free ecological farming. 🌱

In Santa Marta, we sounded the sweet melody of a fossil free, veganic future.
A future in which our transition away from grazing allows us to protect the homes of capybaras and to truly regenerate our ecosystems.

This is shocking: the House Rules Committee just blocked a vote on stripping the Save Our Bacon Act from the farm bill.
The SOB Act, buried deep in the farm bill, would wipe out state bans on pork from crated pigs, condemning millions to a lifetime in gestation crates.
We were getting very close to having the votes to pass Rep. Luna’s bipartisan amendment to strip the SOB Act from the bill on the floor of the House.
Then pork industry lobbyists got to work. Behind closed doors, they got Rules Committee leadership to stop a vote entirely and protect the SOB Act from the scrutiny it can’t survive.
The only option now is to kill the whole rotten farm bill. Please call your representatives at (202) 225-3121 and tell them to vote NO.
We're here, and we got animal agriculture and plant-based ecofarming into the People's Declaration.
More to come.
50+ countries are meeting in Colombia to launch an alternative to the U.N.'s stalled efforts to confront climate change.
"We have to take the process of the most ambitious countries who accept the science, to actually come together and provide leadership," says @kuminaidoo.
