Life is the curriculum. Do some things and then reflect on what you’re learning. There’s a ton of value in that process alone.
And, an adult-directed or initiated activity often fits the bill. If the activity is chosen by the learner, even worksheets can be fun.
Life is the curriculum. That’s how we always start explaining when people ask what curriculum we use.

One great privilege we can gift our young people is a bin full of resources with no instructions on what to do with them. And then leave the room with no expectation of them to complete anything.

One reason young people are quite adept at dreaming is that they are less interested in what is possible. Supportive adults seek to keep this perspective alive instead of being in the business of bursting bubbles.
“if a subject interest you, go after it, even if it’s in the next county or the next state or the next country. It’s not going to come looking for you. Decide what you want to do. Then decide to do it. Then do it.” William Zinsser
It’s good advice for adults and children.
If schooling is the pill that is supposed to transform students into adults then self-directed learning is the detox that restores their mental health back to homeostasis.
Pro tip: the schooling pill still relies on a student’s desire to learn, not their desire to perform.

When we write college recommendation letters for kids we’ve known well for years, & been part of a community with, there’s a lot more to say than if we saw them for an hour a week for a year & read a few papers. It makes a real difference!
If #democratic schools have taught us anything it is that young people are capable of guiding their own journey and still be prepared for college and careers.
That frees educators to focus on building long-lasting and trusting relationships with students.

I keep coming to the same principle again and again; desire matters.
When it comes to curriculum development it's no different. We cannot just say, "It doesn't matter if they want to do it."
Desire matters. It has always mattered and it forever will matter.
Why create an academy built on Self-Directed Education?
Lack of engagement in school/society
Lack of accountability for teasing
Many students lose their creativity in school
We have systems for all three.

I think I finally understand why I hated English and Literature so much in school.
I’m a writer. No matter what interests I’ve always had I have slowly and continuously expressed myself in writing.
And school removed all the soul.

What do you like learning about outside of school?
I like finding games to play, I love the idea of Legos but I don’t actually use them anymore, and I like conversation and ☕️

When children are allowed to govern themselves from a young age, they'll do a much better job of it when it really matters.

Your don’t HAVE to go to a 4 year college. There are so many professions out there. My plumber makes WAY more than I do w a Masters. The garbage truck guy makes more than I do. Encourage kids to pursue their dreams not yours.

If I’m only doing a task to avoid pain or get a reward, then the task must not be worth doing.
These are the unintended messages of coercion. #coercionistheproblem
