Elon Musk's statement about needing to have pity for Russian conscripts is the ultimate act of cynicism and hypocrisy. If Elon wants the war to stop and Russian conscripts not to die, the thing to do is help Ukraine win as quickly as possible, rather than forcing Ukraine to sacrifice itself. A Ukrainian victory is the only way to save the lives of the Russians Musk sympathizes with so deeply.

The irony is that even Elon Musk’s own AI can fact-check him and explain why he’s wrong. Russia hasn't launched another mass mobilization since 2022. Instead, it relies heavily on paid contract soldiers. In 2025 alone, Russia recruited an estimated 364,000 contract soldiers. In 2026, it's still recruiting around 20,000–30,000 a month, offering signing bonuses averaging over $20,000, plus salaries and benefits. By claiming Russians β€œhave no choice,” Musk once again shows how little he understands Russian society. Widespread corruption, bribery, and draft evasion have allowed many Russians to avoid military service for years. Many Russians aren't being forced to fight. They're signing up for money. Coercion exists, but so does financial motivation. Hundreds of thousands are signing contracts to fight for money.

Elon Musk claims that Ukraine allegedly violated Starlink's terms of use and used the system on combat drones. As someone who was inside the process at the Ministry of Defense, I can say with certainty that this is not true. In February of this year, whitelists were introduced. Stationary terminals could be registered by both military personnel and civilians. But for any satellite terminal to work while on the move, it had to be added to a special list and connected to the military Starshield system. Otherwise, no satellite communication terminals in Ukraine would work. In other words, using civilian Starlink for drone missions was technically impossible. All drone missions that required satellite communication could only be carried out using Starshield. We are very grateful to the United States and SpaceX for access to critically important satellite communications. Ukraine did not violate the terms of use.
