NYT: Gina Hinojosa announces that former Texas State House Representative Ernest Bailes, a Republican, will be part of her transition team.
Hinojosa: “We will have a bipartisan transition and we will have a bipartisan administration in government in Texas.”
NEW: For over a century, Virginia has banned anyone convicted of any felony of their right to vote ***for life.***
Voters just abolished this Jim Crow-era policy.
A huge result from Virginia—our just-out story:

what voting looks like for some iowans
NEW in Bolts: An executive order restored voting rights to Iowans with past convictions. It was followed by little-to-no public education by state officials and widespread confusion by would-be voters.

Mistick’s column on the trauma of public executions is worth a careful read. The human cost is real for everyone involved. We can disagree on the death penalty while still choosing dignity and civil conversation.

It costs $8-21 billion each year to incarcerate children nationally. Conversely, investments in community programs like diversion, restorative justice & violence interruption are much more effective, create greater public safety, & cost much less money. eji.org/news/incarcerating-y…

Hasan should face the death penalty, but making his execution public and streaming it? Beyond disgusting. Public executions are what oppressive dictatorships like Iran and Afghanistan do. It should not be happening in America.
The U.S. military plans to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan, the ex-Army major who was convicted of the 2009 killing of 13 people at Fort Hood, when he faces a firing squad on Dec. 3, a Pentagon official said.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said earlier Thursday the Pentagon planned to make the execution public.
Hasan's case could mark the military's first execution of an American service member since 1961.

I think I have pretty sterling pro-death penalty credentials.
I do not think they should livestream an execution.

As a homicide detective, I can say with all of my being that there is no lesson learned in seeing someone die. But there is a price. And that price is your peace. Your decency. And the soul of our society.
We don’t have to be this way, this fake tough but real ugly way. Stop
Breaking news: The firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be live-streamed, the Defense Department said.
“People need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said. wapo.st/4hNxK0C

Victim services are facing a critical moment — and communities need to understand what is at stake.
PCCD’s VOCA Toolkit explains how federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding reductions are affecting Pennsylvania’s victim service providers and the victims and survivors they serve.
VOCA funding helps support essential services across the Commonwealth, including advocacy, counseling, crisis intervention, emergency shelter, safe housing, hotlines, court accompaniment, and other supports that help victims find safety, stability, and a path forward after crime.
But the federal Crime Victims Fund has declined sharply, creating serious challenges for the local programs that victims and survivors rely on.
PCCD surveyed 127 victim service providers to better understand the impact of VOCA funding reductions. The findings show providers are facing increased staff burnout, hiring challenges, reduced capacity, and growing concern about their ability to fully meet victims’ needs.
The toolkit is a resource for advocates, service providers, local leaders, policymakers, and community partners working to protect victim services in Pennsylvania.

Twelve years since you left us, Dad. And I never stopped talking to you.
I tell you about the people who write to me because you got them through their worst night. I tell you about the work, the wins, the days that ask too much.
Mostly I tell you about your grandchildren. They know your laugh. They ask about what you were like. I tell them you were kind.
You spent your life making people feel less alone. That job is ours now.
Miss you today. Miss you always. Love you forever.
