More people need to see this: The truly impressive, but largely unknown @shellgrotto in Margate. Who built it, when and why? And how many tea breaks were required before it was completed? #gotothegrotto #cliftonville #cliftonville #margate #walpolebay

We’ve recovered a collection of globally important shells from Captain Cook’s fated third voyage, previously thought to have been lost for 40 years 🐚
See them on display at Chesters Roman Fort in Northumberland for the first time in 100 years 📍 👀

We LOVE the Shell Grotto - if you haven't been, you need to go!
A big welcome to our new manager Nicky Paton who joins us from the similarly enigmatic Royston Caves in Herts. Apparently more at home below ground than above it, he's moved to #Margate to care for the Grotto & develop our visitor experience 🐚

The Grade 1 listed shell temple in Margate is just simply amazing! I was blown away! Nobody really knows how old it is other than that it was ‘discovered’ in 1835. Theories abound. Shapes on the walls included flowers, arches and geometric shapes. Fascinating! @shellgrotto
