We watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture for the first time last night and spent basically the entire movie just losing my mind over how amazing it looks. I am all in man.

Goddamn it. Do I get to say "I told you so!" now? I'm not specifically angry at geoff; a lot of other people were duped, too. I never was. I said from the beginning that codes of conduct were a pernicious trend that would lead to nothing but bickering and ruin. You'd think, givem that I'm the guy who originally wrote down the anthropology of open source, more people might have taking heed of my warning. Sigh...
Open-source "codes of conduct" are cancer and need to be retired; I deeply regret championing them. The inevitable outcome is an unproductive mob controlling projects through intimidation. Given enough time, it pushes away people who would contribute patches. Eventually, all that remains is an unproductive military-police class playing social status games.

🚨 NEW: 73% of responses to the consultation used by Shabana Mahmood to decide her settlement reforms were current visa holders compared with 18% who were British citizens

Someone, somewhere, didn't have the faith to create a TNG movie that focussed on dialogue, characters, and continuation of the story. We've had plenty of thoughtful sci-fi - just not here. Instead, we ended up with Picard wearing goggles in a 4x4 with a machine gun.
Interesting how TNG did not really work when translated to the big screen, while for many if not most people Star Treks II, IV and VI are the best things the original crew appeared in.

"We ran a consultation where we asked a large number of visa holders about reforms to visa rules, and they said you should make the rules less stringent"
Mahmood's reforms: expedited citizenship for the most expensive groups (low skilled care workers, refugees) and a special second chance visa for care workers who didn't meet the very low standards. The taxpayer will be on the hook for tens of billions.

It's legal insomuch as no one, as far as I'm aware, has tested it yet in a court of law. It would be interesting to see how a court would handle AI's "You get X* amount of usage per month, and we deduct Y** amount of compute per job." *X may change at will. **Y may change at will
I don't understand how this is legal. If you walk into a tire center and order 4 tires for $1200 and they are 80,000 mile BFGoodwrench tires, then the next week, you go to have them put on and instead they install cheaper 20,000 mile house brand tires... And the tire center says, "these are costing us too much so we installed the 20,000 mile tires instead." And they refuse to give you a refund. There would literally be massive legal ramifications and the tire shop would be liable. I paid for a specific multiple of a specific amount after months of testing. Now that multiple has been cut in half, mid-cycle, with no warning. I would argue this is a direct violation of the FEC rules (16 CFR Part 238). Pricing pages and marketing made the multipliers look like fixed relative entitlements for the billing period, and the reduction was extreme and sudden with no notice, there is a colorable argument that the original offer was misleading. That is different from a pure “rate limits at our discretion” clause.

I don't see the problem with plebs being allowed RAM. I am willing to sell monthly subscriptions for @sama to use my under-utilised RAM. He can sign up for: Free: Limited access to my under-utilised RAM. Pro: Everything in Free and: Even more RAM. * * Limits apply
Sam Altman is actually right about this, and most people are missing the bigger picture. Think about how much RAM sits unused in hundreds of millions of personal computers every single day. People buy machines with 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of RAM, yet most of that capacity is barely utilized for much of the day. Meanwhile, AI research, scientific computing, and cloud infrastructure are competing for the same limited global supply of memory. From an economic perspective, this is an incredibly inefficient allocation of resources. In a data center, memory can be pooled, shared, and continuously utilized by thousands of workloads. Instead of expensive hardware sitting idle for most of its lifespan, that same capacity can support services used by millions of people. Higher utilization means more computing output from the same physical resources, potentially lower costs per workload, and less pressure to manufacture additional hardware. This doesn't mean everyone should give up owning a computer. Local computing still matters for privacy, independence, latency, and offline access. But the fundamental principle is correct: maximizing individual ownership of scarce hardware isn't necessarily the same thing as maximizing its usefulness to society. The future of computing isn't just about who owns the most powerful hardware. It's about how efficiently we use the hardware humanity already has. >Add a sharper counterargument>Make the opening more attention-grabbing⋮⋮⋮⋮⋮⋮⋮⋮

It’s entirely reasonable to question the cultural and ethnic transformation of a country when even its capital is losing its own identity. Where have all the Cockneys gone? We’re told to celebrate diversity, yet expected to stay silent as London’s traditional culture disappears. Why is everyone else’s heritage worth preserving but ours?

So you can basically do anything, because the second someone Russian says "Hey, isn't that Donald Tusk doing something bad?", your big-brain retort is "Well duh, of course they'd say that, they're Russian!"?
Dmitrij Miedwiediew, były prezydent Rosji, stwierdził, że w Polsce doszło do zamachu stanu, a “liberałowie Tuska, protegowanego Brukseli, uciskają konserwatystów z PiS”. I wszystko jasne.

Zasesti nacionalno RTV s policijo in zamenjati vodstvo (Poljska); 6. Prekiniti mandate vodstvu nacionalne RTV in izvesti čistko zaposlenih (Slovenija); 7. Poslati v zapor člane prejšnje vlade brez možnosti obrambe (Madžarska); 8. Podeliti skoraj milijon državljanstev ilegalnim migrantom po hitrem postopku (Španija); 9. Zapreti novo Nuklearno elektrarno in zgraditi plinovod do Rusije (Nemčija); 10.

They literally have nothing else in the tank apart from nostalgia for those glory days when Brussels wrote the laws & UK politicians implemented them. Taking responsibility for our country's destiny? Nah, far too difficult. Democracy be damned.
NEW Rachel Reeves tonight declares Britain should return to the European Union The former chancellor says Brexit made the UK “poorer, weaker and less secure” She will make her case in a lecture at the Harvard Kennedy School on Monday Reeves helped draft the Labour 2024 manifesto which said no EU return She’s one of the most prominent Lab figures to back rejoin since Burnham became PM The tectonic plates within Labour are shifting. Will more follow her? Reeves writes in The Sunday Times: “I am proud of the progress we have already made in strengthening our relationship with the European Union. Brexit has made us poorer, weaker and less secure. “There is a debate to be had about our future relationship with Europe, and I welcome Andy Burnham’s leadership in facing up to this. No one in the Treasury ever doubted where my instincts were. “I do believe Britain’s future lies in the European Union. “However, it is incumbent on supporters of our re-entry to make the argument, demonstrate tangible benefits and to get the next steps right — especially ahead of the UK-EU summit later this month, where at a minimum we should be looking for confirmation of the ambitious youth mobility scheme negotiated earlier this year, and — I hope — progress towards entry into the SAFE defence partnership.” thetimes.com/article/06d9b6a…

A welcome step from the PM. The Transatlantic Slave Trade was one of history’s most heinous crimes. We must be honest about how the horrors of our past have shaped the present - because only then can we begin to build a fairer future for everyone.
