watching @ilyasut's discourse at @NeurIPSConf 2024, where he paints a picture of the internet as a "fossil fuel" of data, a finite resource we've amassed over time but are now rapidly consuming.
he doesn't explicitly propose solutions but mentions possibilities like agentic ai, synthetic data, and inference time compute (as seen with models like o1) as avenues to explore once traditional data sources dry up.
maybe, by extending this metaphor, we can consider how, just as fossil fuels are a secondary source of energy, derived from the sun over eons, human-created data is, in essence, a derivative of human experience, cognition, and interaction.
taking sutskever's ideas further, if we wish to transcend these limitations, we might need to tap into the primary "energy" source behind human data - the dynamic, creative, and evolving nature of human interaction itself. envisioning this:
by engaging human interaction to refine or co-create data with ai, we could generate super high-quality data that resonates with human experience, effectively creating a new, renewable source of information. this would be akin to using solar energy directly rather than relying on fossil fuels; it's about accessing the "solar energy" of human thought and creativity, not just what has been recorded. this approach could lead to an informational renaissance, where ai not only consumes but also generates data in a cycle that's continuously enriched by human input. the challenge would be to manage this new "data energy" sustainably, ensuring it enhances human creativity without overwhelming our resources or diminishing human relevance. this vision invites us to reimagine data's value, its ethical implications, and how human involvement can keep this data evolution aligned with societal values, avoiding new forms of digital pollution.
in essence, sutskever's discussion opens the door to a future where ai and human collaboration could redefine our informational landscape, making synthetic data not just a simulation but a vibrant, evolving part of our digital narrative, much like how we now seek renewable energy over fossil fuels.

this conversation with @FryRsquared and @OriolVinyalsML from google deepmind on their podcast dives into how gemini 2.0 is pushing ai autonomy - one of the things that gemini does is act like a digital helper, clicking through your browser or planning your holiday with just a nudge from you.
this "agentic" approach - a term that might not win any creativity awards - could redefine how we interact with technology, offering tailored experiences but also subtly posing questions about control and bias in ai actions.
hearing hannah and oriol, you get the feeling google's culture might have a 'play nicely' handbook, where even the wildest ideas learn to sit in a circle and share.

just watched scott aaronson, the complexity theorist who has recently returned to ut austin after a two-year stint at openai, in a thought-provoking conversation on @Liv_Boeree's "the win win podcast."
aaronson explores the concept of ai alignment, suggesting that human non-cloneability could be our distinguishing feature in the ai age. he questions whether our uniqueness stems from our irreplaceable individuality rather than consciousness. his insights challenge us to consider the implications for ai safety and human identity.
discover his perspective on how safeguarding this uniqueness might shape ai's future.
@ESYudkowsky curious about your thoughts on scott aaronson's idea of non-cloneability as a focus for ai alignment.

watched it so you don't have to: @ESYudkowsky and @stephen_wolfram on ai risk
i just sat through a 4.5-hour conversation where eliezer yudkowsky and stephen wolfram explored the depths of ai risk. yudkowsky expresses his fear that superintelligent ai might not value human consciousness or the fun aspects of life, advocating for alignment to preserve these qualities. wolfram, however, projects a stoic demeanor due to his focus on universality, suggesting that consciousness might not be as unique as yudkowsky presents it.
the crux of their debate is wolfram's rejection of the universality of yudkowsky's premise, even though he viscerally agrees as a human. wolfram seems convinced there's more to investigate, showing his deep investment in this dialogue.
if you really think you want to watch it yourself, here's a link to the point where they discuss the "shnoozle," illustrating the concept of personal truth versus objective reality in the context of ai:

zizek's take on israel post-election is a classic twist. he employs the bohr horseshoe analogy, suggesting, "I don't believe in this, but I was told that it works even if I don't believe," to highlight the paradoxical nature of political distractions. he notes how the war conveniently shifts focus from internal issues, much like a horseshoe supposedly wards off evil spirits. it's not about taking sides but revealing the irony and complexity in global politics.

alibaba's qwon qwq-32b impressively cracked the "t" sequence test (1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11...) on its first try, pinpointing 100 as the next number without "t" in its english spelling:
- it progressed from basic hypotheses (arithmetic, geometric, polynomial) to more complex explorations, demonstrating adaptability in its search for the pattern
- it uniquely grasped that the pattern was defined by absence, not presence, of "t" in the numbers
- after exploring numbers up to 25, it made an insightful leap to 100
while it's early to gauge qwq-32b's overall performance, its handling of this puzzle outshines chatgpt 4o, o1, claude, gemini, and grok, showing a promising blend of persistence, lateral thinking, and pattern recognition. this success might be specific to this test, yet it suggests potential for more sophisticated reasoning tasks.

the recent conversation between @ericschmidt and @profgalloway on ai feels out of sync with modern tech culture, lacking the depth and moral consideration one might expect. schmidt's view that ai should not have free speech raises questions about control versus openness in tech development.
youtu.be/AjgwIRPnb_M?si=MZZn…@elonmusk, your stance on free speech is well-known. how do you view the idea of ai having free speech rights? could your perspective help steer the conversation towards a future where ai and humans share a platform for expression?

What a joke.

people think they should maximize epsilon but the trick is to maximize the other two.

Tl;dr: The harms from so-called AI are real and present and follow from the acts of people and corporations deploying automated systems. Regulatory efforts should focus on transparency, accountability and preventing exploitative labor practices."

The two on the left are simplifications created based on a decsion tree algorithm. The work illustrates a popular type of machine learning model: the decision tree. Decision trees work by splitting the population into ever smaller segments. I try to give people an intuitive understanding of the algorithm. I also want to show that models are simplifications of reality, but can still be useful, or in this case visually pleasing."
