Syria Drops Anti-Turkish References as Al-Sharaa Overhauls History Curriculum
Syria's new textbooks remove the "Great Arab Revolt" label and Cemal Pasha's "Butcher of the Arabs" epithet, recasting the 1916 uprising and executions of Arab nationalists as part of a wider shift away from anti-Ottoman narratives.

RED SEA SHIPPING RECOVERS, BUT COSTS REMAIN HIGH
Bank of America reports Red Sea shipping traffic has recovered to 65% of normal levels, up from 50% in September.
However, oil tanker rates remain elevated at up to $650,000 per day, while dry bulk rates are up 31% year-over-year.
The key takeaway: Shipping is recovering, but high freight costs continue to threaten global inflation.

FT’s report on Lula’s comeback says Flávio Bolsonaro’s “nine fingers” jab in the final debate, mocking the finger Lula lost in a factory accident at 17 while working nights, became a turning point.
The attack let Lula draw a sharp contrast between his own working-class history and Bolsonaro’s background, helping shift momentum in the runoff.

What
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva came from behind to win Brazil’s runoff election, halting a right-wing wave sweeping Latin America and defying predictions that the 80-year-old political veteran had finally reached the end of his extraordinary career. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
I'll start a thread on the count in Brazil—so people who are interesting can follow along.
With 9% of vote counted, Lula up 50.6 to 49.4; that's a lead of 102K. (Pattern in 2022 & in R1 was Lula down big at first, then closing gap, but that's shaken up by today's 2-hour delay.)

I feel like there is an argument for Henry James to be THE greatest american writer. Maybe only contested by Melville
