It’s my view - and I don’t feel the slightest pessimism about it. I’m deeply optimistic about Europe as a whole and as a team. The morose framing is your own. I’ve never subscribed to this notion that being a member of the EU is some sort of victimhood. Especially for a hugely influential country like ours. For many countries, joining the EU was their liberation from tyranny- and now east to west we’re seeing over two dozen countries work together day in day out on shared issues - with their citizens and small business empowered by extra freedoms to work, trade, live across borders with ease. As a scientist I’ve seen the shared European structures at their best - liberating scientists all over the continent (and world now) to work together… and pooling resource to support science at vast scale to crack problems that need scale. Brexit was framed as a liberation from oppression. It has been anything but. In the vain search for a purist form of “liberty” from the straw man monster of our neighbourhood friends, we have ripped liberties and powers away from our own citizens and businesses- hemming them in and telling them to themselves find the benefits of blowing off our foot. That’s no freedom. Look, I’m a scientist so I can’t begrudge experimentation. What I do object to is this new religion of reflexively slagging off everything European… and so a determination to do our own continent down in the vain hope that this will validate restrictions we imposed on ourselves. Without reassessing where we are. With the US, Russia & China in aggressive flux, I see huge opportunities for the UK and Europe and CANZUK all together as a team. A lot is going to happen over the next decade(s) and I want us with the right team (Europe & Commonwealth) at the juncture of it all. Despite all the dangers lurking in the world at this time, my view is fundamentally very, very optimistic of what we can be.
Believing Britain's future lies within the European Union is a hugely pessimistic view. It's a view that says Britain can't hack it setting its own tariffs, regulating its own goods and services, setting its own taxes, controlling its own border, and eventually managing its own currency. It's a miserable acceptance that Britain is defeated - and consequently must be subsumed into a larger political entity, under a higher political authority.

Great to hear GBeebies allow @mikegalsworthy to speak and seem resigned to reality that we are on the way back to the EU ❤️

For the avoidance of doubt: there are no Brexit benefits. It's time for the UK to rejoin the EU.

One day when I was still very young, I asked my father about his parents. I knew my maternal grandparents intimately, but I wanted to know why I had never met his parents. “Because they died,” he said wistfully. “Will you ever see them again?” I asked. He considered his answer carefully. Finally, he said that there was nothing he would like more in the world than to see his mother and father again, but that he had no reason — and no evidence — to support the idea of an afterlife, so he couldn’t give in to the temptation. “Why?” Then he told me, very tenderly, that it can be dangerous to believe things just because you want them to be true. You can get tricked if you don’t question yourself and others, especially people in a position of authority. He told me that anything that’s truly real can stand up to scrutiny. — Sasha Sagan; Lessons of Immortality and Mortality From My Father Carl Sagan

At least 24 people have been killed and five injured in a Russian airstrike on a school being used as a humanitarian aid distribution centre in southeastern Ukraine. The attack hit the village of Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhzhia region, where residents had gathered to receive essential supplies and take shelter. Ukraine’s emergency services say two rescue workers and four police officers were among those killed. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russian forces carried out a second strike, dropping a further nine guided bombs on the shelter where people had taken cover following the initial attack. Rescue teams are continuing to search through the rubble for survivors, with fears the death toll could rise.

My medical licence was suspended in November 2025. For 15 months. As a result of my advocacy for Palestine. At the behest of the UK pro-'israel' and zionist jewish lobby. Today, I had my second six-monthly review with the @gmcuk and @the_mpts. For my submission, covering any updates since the last review in May 2026, I told the panel: - 4,797 Palestinians have since been murdered by the jewish occupation in Gaza. 1,490 of them were children. That is 31%. - Bombing and massacres occur daily. - Palestinians continue to be held hostage, kidnapped, and tortured. - 'israel' continues with impunity, without justice for the Palestinians or the British citizens they massacred. The GMC counsel described me as 'unrepentant' in my social media activity, giving this as one reason to continue my suspension. I affirmed that I am indeed unrepentant in speaking out against the genocide and the system of supremacy that the UK government continues to fund and arm. That is anchored in my belief in the sanctity of life and the belief that God created all humans equally. The suspension continues, of course. The GMC will have to apply to the High Court in February if they want to extend it further. I miss my job and career. I miss practising medicine, caring for patients and the British people. My words, spoken or shared, were against their crimes. Their barbarity. To be unrepentant in this is my duty as a human, a Muslim, and a doctor. Free Palestine and Britain from zionism 🇵🇸🇬🇧

Overnight alone, our energy infrastructure came under Russian attack in four regions: Dnipro, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, and Khmelnytskyi. Substations, transformers, and power lines that supply electricity to our people’s homes were targeted. Repair crews are working everywhere. As of now, hundreds of thousands of families remain without power. Massive Russian attacks on Ukraine’s other critical infrastructure are also continuing unabated. This past week Russia has launched 1,940 attack drones, more than 1,580 guided aerial bombs, and 44 missiles of various types against Ukraine, including 36 ballistic missiles. The intensity of the strikes is extremely high, and the Russians are trying to take maximum advantage of the shortage of ballistic missile interceptors. Every day, we communicate our need for Patriot missiles to America, Europe, and other partners who can help. And this month, the United States and European countries made new decisions on additional packages for Ukraine. But these deliveries cannot take years. Russia is destroying infrastructure and killing our people right now, and it is betting on ballistic missiles this winter. Accordingly, decisions on air defense must also be implemented now. I thank everyone who supports the defense of Ukrainian skies.

🚨Governor JB Pritzker just nailed it about Haley Stevens: “It's just terrible. Honestly, if you're not on board and supporting Democrats taking over the United States Senate, YOU SHOULD JUST BE QUIET. And a vote for Mike Rogers is a vote for Donald Trump, and I just don't understand why she's done this.”

Once again, Steve Rosenberg’s reporting offers a sobering reminder of what happens when a government seeks to extinguish independent journalism and silence those who question its authority. Whatever our frustrations with the press in Britain and elsewhere in the democratic world, we should never take its freedom for granted. We can challenge its reporting, dispute its conclusions and condemn its editorial judgement. That freedom to disagree is itself something precious. A newspaper must be free to scrutinise those in power without its survival depending upon their approval. The same principle applies in the United States. Whenever a president seeks to intimidate journalists or undermine independent scrutiny, the courts and other democratic institutions must uphold the law without fear or favour. Their duty is to the constitution and the public, never to the personal interests of the occupant of the White House. In Russia, the promise associated with glasnost and the possibility of a more open society has been steadily betrayed. Under Putin, public accountability has given way to repression, whilst the space for independent reporting and political opposition has narrowed relentlessly. The Russian people deserve better than a state that demands their obedience whilst denying them the means to scrutinise those who govern them. That is why we must distinguish between Russia’s people and its rulers. Dissent carries risks that those of us living in freer societies can too easily underestimate. Silence under repression must never automatically be mistaken for consent. It is also why Ukraine’s struggle matters so profoundly. Ukrainians are fighting for the right to determine their own future, rather than have it dictated by the Kremlin. Their sovereignty cannot be surrendered merely because an aggressor possesses the weapons and the willingness to inflict suffering. Britain’s own history, including its imperial past, should make us more conscious of that principle. Our parliamentary democracy was neither complete from the outset nor secured without struggle. The right to choose our representatives, challenge our government and remove it through the ballot box was hard won. We have a responsibility to defend those freedoms and to support others whose independence is under attack. On 3 November, American voters have their own opportunity to exercise democratic accountability. Across Europe, we must continue to support Ukraine because resisting aggression and defending a sovereign people’s freedom is a matter of principle. Political inconvenience cannot make that obligation disappear. Steve Rosenberg continues to bring us reporting from within Russia that helps illuminate what its authorities would prefer the world not to examine. His work deserves our attention, and the Russian people deserve our concern. Freedom depends upon people being able to discover the truth, speak without fear and hold their leaders accountable. When those rights are suppressed, we must have the resolve to say so, and the determination to stand beside those defending them.
“There are political repressions taking place. Now they’ve reached us.” Journalist and Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov tells me how the Russian authorities have “strangled” Russia’s most prominent independent newspaper. Novaya Gazeta is closing down. #ReadingRussia

🇪🇺 Kaja Kallas: We heard yesterday that Lavrov was saying that Putin will talk to Zelensky when he comes, or if he comes, to Moscow. This is not the way it is. There are many neutral places provided where they can meet. And if he were serious, then he would first really stop killing civilians. Russia is attacking civilians in Ukraine. They are not making any battlefield advances. So what they are doing instead is increasing the attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.

🎃🔥 Russians had an unforgettable Halloween: Ukrainian drones — and even balloons — filled the skies over European Russia. And Russians kept asking the same question: what happened to our air defence? 👀 Ukraine is already using balloon-assisted systems that can carry strike drones closer to their targets, saving battery power and extending their range. (РБК-Україна) 🇺🇦 Innovation beats the old Soviet war machine. The only working peace plan is to defeat and demilitarize Russia. #StandWithUkraine #RussiaIsCollapsing #MakeRussiaSmallAgain

Hopefully this continues until there is no more refining capacity left in Russia. So much for Putin’s attempt to get Trump to stop this with bluster
Continuing to burn throughout the day, Russia's 11 syllabled LUKOIL-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez refinery - the 2nd largest gasoline producer in the country - now confirmed to be totally out of commission, having suffered precision strikes in its key processing units. With the US no longer standing in the way, Putin's oil industry is doomed.

Proud and grateful that Ukraine has a friend like you, José. Thank you to you and the entire World Central Kitchen team for the warmth of your dishes and hearts.
As the great people of Oleshky arrived to Ukraine after a long trip @WCKitchen lead by Yuliya is ready with borscht, and many other Ukranian dishes! The route was long: from Oleshky through Crimea to Anapa in Russia, then a flight to Belarus and onward by road into Chernihiv region. After a journey like that, warm, good food matters a great deal. #ChefsForUkraine Proud that the teams were first in Irpin and Bucha, in Kherson….so many special powerful moments! now here…Ukrainians are the best of us!
