To celebrate 'Book Thursday' - when the publishing giants get going for the Big Christmas Push - here is the one place in the UK you'll find all of my books: simonparke.com/books Christmas sorted. Apart from the stable story, which cannot be held within any book cover.

Pavarotti fue extraordinario, eso es indiscutible. Pero Jonathan Tetelman tiene algo especial… Su interpretación de Nessun dorma transmite un sentimiento difícil de describir. ¡Grandioso!

Simon Heffer’s final pars in his review of Liz Truss’ new book. Of all the best examples of the Westminster unreality machine, where parts of the illiberal metropolitan elite and press build someone up clearly beyond their abilities, she was by far the worst. Zero accountability, of course.

No one painted water like Frits Thaulow. Just look at the river in this painting: it feels like it’s really moving, catching the light and swallowing it at the same time. He painted it in 1892 and called it Water Mill, a picture that does the hardest thing in all of art… it makes water look alive. What made him so extraordinary is that he could paint several kinds of water at once: the pale reflections of the buildings on the surface, the green tint of the water itself, the ripples running across the top, and the rocks sitting on the bottom, all of it layered together, melting into one another the way real water actually does. Most painters can manage one of those things. He gave you all four in a single glance. Thaulow was Norwegian, born in 1847, and he grew up in a country made of fjords, rivers and waterfalls, and he chose to spend his life on the single hardest subject a painter can attempt, the one thing that will not sit still and will not hold a shape. And in doing so, he made the fleeting beauty of water eternal...

"This is what Donald Trump went to bed thinking about, he will not be able to stand the coverage." The new White House press secretary lasted only 14 painful minutes at the podium in her debut briefing. Is Trump already plotting ways to replace her?

J. M. W. Turner, The Fighting Temeraire, 1839 The HMS Temeraire was a famous warship from Trafalgar. By 1838, it was obsolete. Turner saw a small steam tug drag the wooden giant down the Thames for scrap. It changed art history forever, anticipating Impressionism and setting the stage for modern art. Turner called this painting "My Darling". He refused every offer to sell it during his lifetime and left it to the British nation when he died.

Andrew Scott delivers this speech too slowly; I know some viewers will hate the way he breaks up the verse. AND YET even in spite of that I think this is the best delivery of this soliloquy I’ve ever seen. He makes it sound like it’s not a portentous speech everyone already knows but a morally serious real-time deliberation, by a highly intelligent person in extreme pain, considering what it would mean to end his own life.

This guy utterly dismantles the populist politics of Reform and Restore in 90 seconds. It’s actually quite beautiful. Take decades of deep-rooted problems in Britain and convince people that a relatively tiny proportion of the population is responsible for all of them. Housing, the NHS, crime. Blame illegal migrants for everything. Suddenly, you don’t need credible solutions to the housing crisis, NHS waiting lists or crime. You just need increasingly extreme policies on immigration. And by the time people realise you never had meaningful answers to the vast majority of Britain’s problems, you’re already in power, handing out tax cuts to your donors.

Here it is. This is the clip from yesterday's @CNN interview where I'm asked - for first time ever - about Brexit-Trump-Russia. "These vital questions of national security have been interpreted as about politics. And it's not about politics. It's about power. And about Putin."
