I want to provide an update on the storm that impacted Mississippi last night.
As of now, 17 injuries have been reported. Initial damage assessments indicate:
-275 homes and 50 apartment units are damaged or inaccessible in Lamar County. 30 roads are closed due to debris. The county shelter/safe room is open. American Red Cross support is available.
-More than 200 homes were damaged in Lincoln County. The Cajun Navy is deploying a 50-person shelter pod, 30KW generator, and 10 pallets of supplies.
-12 homes were damaged in Lawrence County. Multiple roads are closed due to downed trees and power lines.
These numbers are preliminary and will change as damage assessments continue.
@MSEMA is supporting damage and operations assessments. Road clearing teams are being deployed to remove debris and the state is deploying additional resources as requested by local emergency managers.
Please continue to pray for Mississippi!

These are the many #tornado shelters in the area under threat from severe storms tomorrow - this is the SPC outlook overlaid with the map. That said, many areas don't have them (the greatest concentration is in the north).

Hurricane Helene is expected to make landfall this evening. As a reminder, once winds reach 35 mph or higher, first responders may be unable to reach you due to dangerous conditions. Have your Ready kit stocked with supplies for at least 3 days.

Great read regarding new research that addresses the ongoing dispute between radar-based low-level wind speeds in tornadoes and intensity estimations using damage indicators/the Enhanced Fujita Scale.
Just how strong are the winds in a tornado? 🌪️
A newly published paper by NSSL researchers concludes that radar-based estimates of near-ground wind speeds in tornadoes are frequently higher than estimates derived from damage using the EF scale.
