Another correctional officer in Wisconsin received a small fine connected to the death of Donald Maier (pictured below). 5 defendants received misdemeanor convictions and fines ranging from $50 to $500. 4 had their cases dismissed.
Donald Maier, 62, died from malnutrition and dehydration. Medical examiners ruled his death a homicide. The criminal complaint described intermittent water shutoffs, missed meals, and failures involving medication. The lawsuit said Maier grew so desperate for water in solitary that he drank from his cell toilet.
The Wisconsin Department of Corrections agreed to pay a $3.75 million settlement to Maier's family, which comes out of taxpayer money, and not from the pockets of the individuals responsible.
Was Maier a convicted criminal? Yes. Do US jails or prisons have authority to execute a person in their custody? No. These jailers tortured and murdered a person, and our system will let them walk free with a slap on the wrist.
It doesn't matter if the man who was killed was the most despicable criminal in the world. He doesn't represent USA or the justice system, but these jailers DO represent us and our system.
Correctional officers have a standard to uphold. If they break those standards and the system allows it, then it affects everyone. If they can step outside the legal boundaries of their authority to inflict extrajudicial punishments that lead to death, and only get a small fine for it, then what the fuck is the Eighth Amendment even for? And if that amendment can be violated, then it means all of them can be.

In November 1984, 17-year-old Lisa McVey was riding her bike home after a double shift at a donut shop in Tampa, Florida.
Out of nowhere, a man dragged her off the bike and forced her into his car.
He blindfolded Lisa, pressed a gun to her head and drove to his apartment. For the next 26 hours, he raped and tortured her.
The girl believed she was going to die. But she was determined that if she did, police would catch the man who killed her.
So she paid attention to everything. She peeked under her blindfold whenever she could, counted the steps up to his apartment and pressed her fingerprints onto every surface she could reach in his bathroom.
She also kept him talking and promised to be his girlfriend. She even made up a story that her father was seriously ill and depended on her.
Slowly, it worked. After 26 hours, he drove her back toward her grandmother's house and apologized. Then he told her “Tell your father he's the reason why I didn't kill you."
Every detail she had memorized, from his car to his apartment to the ATM he had stopped at, led police straight to him.
His name was Bobby Joe Long. That year, he killed at least 10 women in the Tampa area. He was arrested on November 16, 1984, and later sentenced to death.
Years later, Lisa joined the same sheriff's office that caught him and became a deputy who helps survivors of sexual violence.
In 2019, when Long was executed, she sat in the front row.
