Fact: these Germans found lurking in the woods were easily captured by a nervous American soldier. Fiction (partly based on fact): British war crimes investigator Captain Eric Wise is after one that got away into the forests of southern Austria. But when found, Eric's quarry gets the drop on him... ‘Before I settle on what to do with you, let’s have a few more drinks. Let’s tell our stories - and if I like yours...’ The German paused to grin arrogantly and then added: ‘Maybe I’ll let you live.’ The epic story with all its twists and turns unfolds in my novel 'Martin's Eyes' @chiselbury Available from Amazon amazon.co.uk/Martins-Eyes-Ia… For more info check out the publisher's page chiselbury.co.uk/product/mar…

Today I will introduce the Military Operations Bill to Parliament. In recent years we have subjected our brave service men and women to a slow-motion moral failure. We have watched as our legal system imports laws written to apply to civilians in peacetime into lethal combat zones. As a result, troops tell their commanders they no longer fear only the enemy in front of them but the lawyer behind them. My Bill would put an end to that and ensure that those who defend us know the State stands firmly behind them. thetimes.com/comment/columni…

1/2 Here's something about nuclear-powered Fleet (hunter-killer) submarines (aka SSNs) off the Falklands after the 1982 conflict between Britain and Argentina. In these extracts from my 'Hunter Killers' @orionbooks it is HMS Courageous. 'They used specialist equipment to tune into Argentinian military frequencies. During her 1984 deployment to the South Atlantic, Courageous had all six tubes loaded, half with Tigerfish torpedoes and the rest with Sub Harpoon missiles.' I believe such duties were last carried out in 2010 (by HMS Sceptre, another submarine that features in the book). Sceptre was in the immediate aftermath of the conflict sent to intel-gather off Argentina and likewise act as an unseen deterrent to further ventures by Buenos Aires. It is an option not available to Britain today amid a new crisis with Argentina due to the scandal of no British SSNs currently being deployable.

Here's Katherine Birbalsingh on history and how it is flattened into "oppressor and oppressed" where the oppressor is always the white European (or later American) and the oppressed is always black, brown and if possible female too. She is brilliant!

Something for all authors (and publishers) who are disappointed at sales to see and give them heart. The only problem for Fitzgerald is that he died too early to fully reap the fruits of his labours.

On this day in 1666, a fire broke out in a bakery on Pudding Lane. It raged for four days, destroyed around 13,200 houses and left four-fifths of the City of London in ruins. Discover the full story in James Leasor’s The Plague and the Fire. chiselbury.co.uk

I’m glad you’ve left this up (tho that’s probably because of your serial incompetence rather than intentional). It illustrates that you’ve taken the phrase ‘useful idiots’ to hitherto unexplored heights. Congrats.
Jason Arday is the youngest Black professor in Cambridge’s history – and now rightwing newspapers are trying to smear him with untrue accusations of plagiarism. Not on our watch. Add your name in solidarity with Jason here: goodlaw.social/sktj
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The information in this video is outdated and incorrect. Arday has resigned his professorship at Cambridge without admitting fault. He did this after an enormous amount of additional information demonstrating his fabulism and plagiarism came to light. thetimes.com/uk/education/a… nytimes.com/2026/08/03/boo…

HMS Lancaster, Duke Class (Type 23) frigate in Plymouth Sound. Early 2000s (possibly) or slightly earlier, with Fort Class fleet auxiliary in the background (left) and ferry departing (right). Maybe I was visiting Lancaster when I took this. Another image from the 'rejected for publication drawer' as too soft, though I've sharpened this lo rez snap up a little. HMS Lancaster was considered in too poor condition after her long career (34 years) to make the trip home to Devonport for decommissioning, so taken out of service at Bahrain in the Gulf (last December). Assigned for disposal and still languishes there.

Raising concerns publicly would have led Radakin to have been frozen out by a paranoid No 10. This is how they handled other dissenters. They also gagged any senior officer from speaking on the record. Officials and officers advise, ministers decide. That and loyalty to civilian elected ministers is what we’re taught. Starmer and Healey (and their predecessors) own the UK’s defence debacle
No delusion here. I’ve no doubt Tony Radakin was raising concerns internally. But they clearly weren’t heeded. So why didn’t he then try to raise them more publicly while still in office and when his word carried so much more weight - especially given what was at stake? It seems strange to attack Healey and the review team a year on without mentioning the limitations of his own actions at that time. Also all military chiefs over the decades surely carry some responsibility for the hollowed out state of our defence. It’s too easy only to blame the politicians for the mess we collectively (as this is a problem for the whole nation not just UK defence) are in.
