The directors’ class backgrounds become very clear when you watch these movies. it’s convenient for workers to be erased by capital/tech in No Other Choice to neatly make its point, whereas Possible Love confronts and wrestles with those displaced workers head-on
Possible Love feels like No Other Choice's older and more depressed brother, gut-wrenching stuff

PCW is from a prominent Seoul family. Lee Chang-dong is from a poor family in Daegu. Both are capable of meaningful art, but their approaches on their respective films feel deeply informed by those backgrounds

THIS. Seol Kyung-gu should be at the top of the Best Actor convo this year. He's incredible in Possible Love. even in silence, he has this inexplicable presence you just cant look away from. Such a devastating performance. Won't forget this anytime soon...

Affordability just revived democracy. But to safeguard it, Democrats have to change the playbook, not just the slogans. The economy needs to be rebuilt from the essentials up — to restore public power, put a floor under livelihoods, and a ceiling on private wealth.

Juan Atkins created incredible music, but techno was middle class music made possible by good union jobs in the auto industry. The takeaway shouldn’t be lying and say it’s “working class”, but that it was only possible because those jobs afforded dignity and creative freedom
Juan Atkins's passing is a reminder that techno was invented by Black working class kids, not white bourgeois douchebags in Berlin whose labels and platforms profit from the Palestinian occupation and genocide. Thank you for coming to my TED talk on music history

Atkins himself said “So what happened is that you’ve got this environment with kids that come up somewhat snobby, ‘cos hey, their parents are making money working at Ford or GM or Chrysler, been elevated to a foreman, maybe even a white-collar job.”

Techno’s originators (their families) reaped the benefits of hard-won worker rights, but at the same time those rights were being eroded by bloodsuckers at the big 3 and feckless, corrupt UAW leadership. It is music that envisioned the future while surrounded by gradual decay

Funny how Searchlight, whose whole deal is (ostensibly) getting Dems to be a supermajority, went all in on permitting reform, which lands on the wrong side of multiple supermajority issues (public lands, clean air/water, data centers). Maybe just ignore these guys from now on?

DOGE famously used keyword searches for terms like "climate" to terminate federal grants. Among the victims: a collab between USAID and NASA for flood prediction, early warning, disaster readiness, glacier inventories, and mapping dangerous glacial lakes... ...in Nepal.

Unbelievable that these two managed to describe effective altruism so succinctly. True idiot savants
Michael Porter Jr. and Lonzo Ball say they would press a button that causes one random person to die for $1 billion Lonzo: “Click. You gotta do a click. I'm doing it strictly for the billion. Nothing else here” MPJ: “I’m doing it and this is the reason why. I could take $300 million and go save thousands of lives. Go give it to somewhere over there in Africa or somewhere that has a lot of poverty going on and save a bunch of lives. So that makes up for the one life that was lost for the billion. Then take the other $700 million to the crib. That’s how I would justify it” Lonzo: “This is what I’m gonna say: I didn’t catch the body. It wasn't me. I have no ties. My hand slipped type shit. I need the billion. We can figure out everything else after that”

Asian Americans would be better off if they actually understood what 面子 is, where its moral and status logic clashes with American norms, so they can consciously reconcile the two instead of embodying the worst of both

A Chinese businessman in Cape Verde helped goalkeeper Vozinha's mother fly to US after the 40-year-old shut out Spain and wept that she couldn't afford the visa. Moved by the interview, he tracked down Vozinha's family through a cousin working at his shop, assisted her with the visa application, and even sent her a Yiwu-made suitcase for the journey.
