Did you know that John Smeaton had a passion for astronomy and built his own observatory at his home at Austhorpe, Leeds? He trained as a scientific instrument maker and made telescopes. Machine letter SM/ML/2/135 refers to fine tuning Gregorian reflecting telescope. #Smeaton300

Happy 300th birthday to John Smeaton - often referred to as the father of Civil Engineering. We plant to have this blue plaque repainted this year as our contribution to celebrating this important figure in the city’s history

300 years ago today John Smeaton was born in Austhorpe Leeds! He was the UK’s first Civil Engineer who designed the world famous Eddystone Lighthouse in Plymouth, stopped London Bridge from falling down and is name checked in NASA’s history of flight.
He was not interested in fame and his ethos was to create work for the public good whilst always acknowledging the work of other people. He was one of life’s true problem solvers and creative thinkers who was inspired by the world around him. Happy birthday JS! #Smeaton300

John Smeaton, born in Leeds 300 years ago, was a huge innovator in engineering - coining the term ‘civil engineering’ (see the @smeaton300 project). I think he would have been proud of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme which used moveable weirs to protect the city from flooding
