Many people in India's capital, Delhi, are missing work as they try to get their names back on the voter list. Millions of Delhi residents have been removed in a nationwide revision of electoral rolls known as the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR reut.rs/4sidCs9

“Bittu Tabahi aka Surendra Singh, a 20-year-old BSc student from Biaora in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district, In January he began cleaning a choked stretch of the Ajnar river on his own, working without gloves, protective gear, machinery or a municipal crew. Over 7 months he removed plastic, sludge, algae and solid waste by hand. Videos of the cleanup went viral. MP CM Mohan Yadav called him to Bhopal and assured him of government support. About a month after the appreicated cleanup, the river had filled with garbage again. Bittu was trolled online by usual scummies and nearly gave up. But he chose to continue. Rajgarh district administration has since honoured him and pledged support, which gives what began as a one-man effort a chance of institutional backing. One person can perform inspirational act but keeping it clean depends on regular waste collection, public bins, drainage, enforcement, and residents taking responsibility for the river. Hopefully administration will now do justice to Bittu’s inspiring effort by putting systems in place on the ground. @timesofindia

No elected communist state government in India for the first time in half a century. Naxalism and Maoism physically defeated. Durga Puja celebrations at Lal Chowk, Srinagar. North East more integrated and peaceful (relatively) than ever before. Khalistani movement discredited within India. Neo-separatists received major setback in TN. Andaman’s strategic location being used, Lakshadweep next if needed. Sikkim frustrated Chinese-Bangladeshi-Pakistani plans. Goa and Hyderabad happily in India. Ayodhya reclaimed after centuries: the earlier partial reconquista couldn’t dominate the Gangetic plains for long before a new enemy came via the seas. Now all that is history. What is the present and the future is the incredible rise and return of India, the world’s biggest polity and largest democracy and the fastest growing major economy.

Mental illness doesn't excuse behavior. There's a belief that a diagnosis means a person isn't responsible for their behavior. Two things can be true: we can understand someone is mentally unwell and still understand they're dangerous.

There was a viral post of a mother, father & their happy child, travelling on a rickshaw during Durga puja. Most people loved the pure, unadulterated joy radiating from that clip. But some got heartburn & responded with nastiness. Question is: Why do harmless things like this elicit violent responses from some people? The reason is sad, really. Seeing others celebrate achievements, love, normal family bonds etc. touches a raw nerve. These things remind them of their own unmet needs, which they had perhaps never acknowledged. It triggers deep seated resentment, bitterness, frustration or threatens their fragile egos.

Lying disgraceful SY Quraishi should have been asked how he changed the rules of voter roll inclusion and exclusion while he was CEC — he made it easy for Bangladeshi Muslims to enrol; he made it virtually impossible to delete their names once enrolled. He rose on merit? 😳😂🤣😂
How Mr Gyanesh Kumar Was Appointed The Chief Election Commissioner? “He was not even found fit for the Additional Secretary panel. Later he was also found unfit for the Secretary panel.” In a wide-ranging interview with me for the London Vārta podcast, former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi turns his attention to the man currently under fire from the opposition in India: Gyanesh Kumar, the serving CEC. So how did he get the job? Mr Quraishi does not mince his words. He says: “What is known about this gentleman is that he was very close to Amit Shah. Extremely close—he worked under him in the Home Ministry. He was one of the architects of the removal of Article 370 in Kashmir… Besides that, when the Ram Mandir Trust was being formed, he was the one who set it up.” “According to reports, he was not even found fit for the Additional Secretary panel. Later he was also found unfit for the Secretary panel. But because he had worked so closely with Amit Shah… pressure was applied… and he was made Secretary in the Ministry of Cooperation, of which Amit Shah was the minister.” On the formal selection process itself: “In 2023, the selection of the Chief Election Commissioner had to be made… under the new Act the government called three people to consider the names. One was Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He nominated Amit Shah—the person closest to him, his companion—and the Leader of the Opposition. And Gyanesh Kumar was selected.” The full conversation, covering the Election Commission, the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, and much more, is on the London Vārta podcast. #cineinkpodcast #LondonVārta #syquraishi #GyaneshKumar #ElectionCommission

I saw a post on Reddit that said, “When you walk through a museum, you’re not just looking at art. You’re moving through centuries of people trying to explain love, grief, power, beauty, and belonging.” I don’t think I’ve ever seen a museum described so beautifully.

My whirlwind Kolkata pujo immersion included the large public pandals with a sea of people, Rajbari functions, para & society pujos ,& celebrations at private homes. We did anjali at the Kashi themed pandal at Salt Lake (GD block), took a trip down memory lane at the husband’s childhood colony in Ballygunge, & did Astra daan at the stunning, kumhaar themed pujo at a friend’s home. Now I have to pay attention to my Devi in Delhi. Shubh Ashtami everyone 🙏🏼
Today we went to Shobhabazar Rajbari in North Kolkata. They have two pujos ,split across the Boro & Choto Rajbari, which are diagonally opposite from each other. At the Boro Rajbari ,the Devi’s mount is a horse faced lion (Ghotok-bahini). The Choto Rajbari Protima has a silver overtone as beaten silver foil was traditionally used to craft the ornaments. The Rajbari pujo was started in 1757 & their guest list includes Robert Clive, Warren Hasting & Swami Vivekananda.

The Durga Pujo in the home of Rani Rashmoni - businesswoman, social reformer, builder, fierce defender of Sanatan Dharma. This is the Protima (done in same style) where Ramakrishna Paramhas, no less, would conduct the rituals. Modern Hinduism emerged right from here. Needs a national effort to preserve it.
