Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre has issued his first public statement since being named an accused in the alleged assault on doctors and medical staff at KDMC's Shastri Nagar Hospital, expressing regret over the altercation while denying allegations that he assaulted a woman doctor.
Mhatre claimed he had gone to the hospital after a pregnant woman's family informed him that she was being referred elsewhere due to the unavailability of NICU beds. He said he only tapped the doctor's hand after she continued speaking on the phone instead of listening to the family's concerns, and maintained that he had not raised his hand against her. The Thane police have named Mhatre as an absconding accused, while arresting three of his associates in the case.
The incident has triggered protests by healthcare workers, with resident doctors and nurses warning of a statewide agitation if those responsible are not arrested.
