My favorite part of this saga was finally get connected to the right person internally, who said their team didn’t think Plateful.com was valuable to them and they weren’t interested in buying it. When I helped them understand that no, they actually owned the domain name, and we were interested in acquiring it, the team came back with an asking price of almost $1,000,000. 😀
There are definitely easy ways to buy a domain name. Purchasing one from a large corporation is not one of them. We learned this the hard way while trying to buy Plateful.com from a massive food company that, (for a surprisingly loooonng time), didn’t seem to know it owned the thing. We were working with a startup called Plateful, and had helped them originally to secure Plateful.co. Getting the .com was always the end goal. The problem was that Plateful.com had been sitting inside a huge domain portfolio inherited through an acquisition, somewhere inside a corporation large enough that figuring out who actually controlled it became a project of its own. After months of emails, redirects, and corporate-domain archaeology, we finally reached a guy named “Mike” in Legal & Corporate Affairs. Mike was a champ. He agreed to track down the right people, and eventually we got connected with the marketing team. So we made an offer: $25,000 for Plateful.com. Then, we got a totally unexpected response. The marketing team said “they” weren’t interested in ACQUIRING Plateful.com. We were like, “Wait, whaaaaa??” We just told YOU that we want to BUY the domain from you, and you think we’re trying sell it to you?? Yeeeesh….we knew this was going to be a long ride. Once everyone was on the same page, the company confirmed that, yes, they did own Plateful.com. And then they told us what they thought it was worth. $850,000. At this point, you might assume the story is about an absurdly expensive domain and a company that finally realized what it had sitting in its portfolio. It gets better. They sent us research explaining their valuation, and some of the material looked awfully familiar. They had found our own content about domain valuations and were now using it to make the case for why we should pay them more. Using our own blog posts against us is honestly pretty good. Fortunately, we didn’t pay $850,000. After some more back-and-forth, we eventually acquired Plateful.com and the defensive typo domain Platefull.com for $87,500. Nine months of trying to find the person who knew they owned the domain, followed by an $850,000 valuation supported in part by our own advice about what domains are worth. Buying domains is weird. That’s why we love it. Read Full Story 👇 snagged.com/post/they-owned-…

In general, a great domain is an accelerant for a business that’s already working. If you’ve built something people are willing to pay good $$ for, adding a premium brand/domain can amplify it: higher conversion, stronger brand awareness, more affinity, etc. That said, if you have a shit product with no traction, a premium domain isn’t going to save you. 😀
A recent YC startup spent 250k on a domain. I was slightly shocked. But when I asked how much they raised after YC, the answer was 6.5m. So 1/26 of their round. This is the time we live in; one shocking number counterbalances the other.

My name is Rob, and I have a domain name problem. When I moved to South Orange, NJ, I did what any normal person who is obsessed with domain names would do: I looked up who owned SouthOrange*com. Three years, countless emails, a few support calls, and one in-person coffee later… I bought it. Then I had the same realization every domain collector eventually has: “Okay, now what?” So I built something on it! My story behind acquiring SouthOrange*com 👇

We're finally shedding the .so (thank you Somalia!), and using the .com for @NotionHQ. And for this beautiful moment, I want to share a fun story: Back in 2018, I had just joined Notion, and one of the first things @ivan asked me to do was figure out how we could own notion.com. I had never done a big domain purchase before, so I reached out to a few domain brokers to understand the landscape. We tried different brokers, kept things anonymous, and attempted to surface a price the seller might consider. A year went by… nothing. Meanwhile, it was pretty clear this was only going to get more expensive as we grew. We needed a different approach. A fellow founder connected me to a broker who took a very different tack. Less transactional, more long-term relationship builder. He spent months getting to know the domain owner. Turns out owner was a fellow entrepreneur in the west coast… and a huge Grateful Dead fan. So we figured, why not get creative? Something beyond just price. So I called up our investor Ronny Conway and asked if there was any way he could help set up a private meeting between the domain owner and the Grateful Dead. Ronny is one of those people who somehow makes impossible things possible. A week later he calls me back: “New York City. Halloween. 15 minutes after the concert. Done.” The broker went back to the owner with an offer: some cash, some equity, and a private meeting with the Grateful Dead. That got his attention. He didn’t take the band meeting in the end, but he did lean into the equity (great call, in hindsight). We shook hands, and a few weeks later, the deal was done. I’ve been waiting years for the day we move our product to notion.com. Looks like 2026 is finally the year. Safe to say I’m unreasonably excited about this update!

We used @rob the founder of Snagged dot com as our broker. Easiest domain broker I’ve worked with it took us ~2 years to get @Employerdotcom by ourselves and ~2 weeks using Rob to get Mainstreet.AI Worth a DM if you’re buying or looking for 6 or 7 figures domains.
Just bought a new domain today… ~$100k (all cash). Can anyone guess which domain?

Die.com was sold. The nameservers changed from @eftycom to Cloudflare. I noticed it previously had a @snagged landing page, and @rob confirmed the domain name was sold in a deal brokered by @jarcho. The price isn't being shared. Spotted via @domainIQ_com.
