For genomics to thrive and scale up in Africa, foundational barriers to attracting, training, and retaining talent must be addressed.
Since 2020, the @AfricaCDC Pathogen Genomics Initiative (#AfricaPGI) has catalyzed the expansion of sequencing capacity from 7 to 46 labs in Africa and supported the training of 1400+ professionals in genomics, bioinformatics, and other lab areas. #AfricaPGI #Genomics
Day #3 of the training focused on molecular detection of mpox using qPCR, sequencing using @illumina and @nanopore technologies at @labgenpath
Impressed by the dedication of participants & the commitment to scale-up testing & sequencing in their labs
@EC_HERA
@gatesfoundation
Expanding mpox testing and sequencing should be prioritized and accelerated.
We are leveraging and building on #AfriacPGI partnerships, national and regional capacities, collaborations, systems, and networks. #AfricaCDC @gatesfoundation @illumina @EC_HERA @labgenpath
Today the @AfricaCDC in collaboration with the INRB @labgenpath started a regional training for lab experts from 7 countries. The training is focused on #Mpox testing, sequencing, and sharing. Regional collaboration is key for mpox response. #AfricaPGI @PlacideMbala

Replying to @AfricaCDC
@AfricaCDC and @EC_HERA collaborate to strengthen outbreak detection and genomic surveillance in Africa as part of the Africa PGI 2.0 strategy
Today DG @JeanKaseya2 and Stella Kyriakides @SKyriakidesEU signed the agreement in Addis Ababa.
The cooperation agreements between HERA and @AfricaCDC will:
🔵scale up sequencing-based surveillance
🔵strengthen capacity of public health lab networks
This will aid in the detection of and response to #epidemics.

#AfricaPGI2.0 is a flagship initiative of the Africa CDC to shift from emergency response to an integrated and sustainable, molecular diagnostic, genomic surveillance & epidemiology ecosystem in Africa. We are aligning with the emerging needs, and evolving priorities in Africa
From #AfricaPGI to #AfricaPGI2.0
@AfricaCDC is adapting to the changes in the pathogen genomics surveillance ecosystem. Our new strategy was launched on the sidelines of #CPHIA2023
