A dilemma I have been dealing with in the age of generative AI. Is it better to brainstorm and be deliberate about idea gathering. Or, should the ideas come naturally?

I have heard it said that ChatGPT is having a large impact on Google Search. This appears to be one of the early signs.

If you are an engineer who is working on a mature product and you get an idea that the rest of the team/business is not ready to invest it. Build it behind a feature flag, turn it on for yourself only and use it until it either proves worthwhile or not.

After working on complex code for over 20 years, there came a sudden shift, to no longer working on complex code earlier this year. How did I deal with this shift? What are the lessons I learned along the way?

I am looking forward to the future and the continuation of working with coding models. I look forward, because though this journey I have seen myself become a different kind of an engineer. I am not longer a tinkerer and a defender of good practices.

No I see myself as someone who is an engineering product owner. I look for innovative ways to enable my product to function better, faster, with more use to the users. Reflecting back to myself as a college Computer Science student, this is who I wanted to be event then.

A genuine question: Why are we only vibe coding simple web apps? Why don't we vibe code Kubernetes, operating systems, compilers, databases, and other complex software? Is AI really not good enough to build all of these?

There’s 100% a kind of mania you can get into with coding agents, where it feels like you’re getting a lot done and working all the time but nothing is really happening. I think it's often a form of avoidance of something else in life.

A major movement I'm noticing in the AI age of developing product is the desire to re-invent from the bottom up. A key example is that new products are often focused on building a text-only/CLI experience. This is exactly where computer interfaces started from. ...

The next step is moving on to an more active interface, where data is changed dynamically based on parameters (think early html interfaces). Where we are today, is the AI based products are shifting to having a side-by-side experience of chat with a generated/modifiable UI (think customizable sites).

Noticing this transition, I have a question. Why are we moving so slow? We have already learned all these concept and understand very well what works best for the user. Does product need to re-think how problems actually get solved today? Are we still working in old ways while only getting the benefits of models doing the work?
