When training as a counselling psychologist in the early 90s in London, I found my training in conflict with prevailing views of psychological distress. The extreme pressure I felt under to acquiesce to the medical view was enormous and sustained.

Model. Though my training acknowledged the 'many model' view of psychological distress, I was not prepared for the way my training was so consistently undermined by the health system. My training was integrative, a combination of humanistic and psychodynamic. Later adding

Systemic and CBT. I feel very sad looking back that the very high quality of my training as a psychologist was so disparaged. In reflection, I see that I was there to do the bidding of the system. I now realise what a parallel process that actually was.
