Reassuring that there are sensible people in the Cabinet who understand that ending majority Labour governments, breaking up the party, reducing or ending the constituency link, relying on cranks, secessionists, and ideologically promiscuous minor parties to be the tail that wags the dog after most elections is not in the interests of the Labour Party, the country, or democratic politics. – at Kingston Bagpuize, England

Yep. Anyone who knows who Die Linke is shouldn’t be shocked
Alastair you may be in danger of falling for the fallacy of "no enemies on the Left" which has led to catastrophic consequences before , Communists and Fascists alike are enemies of Democracy and especially Social Democracy ,as a German commentator would be especially aware

The Communists have identified Social Democracy as their main adversary („Hauptgegner“) from day one. Which makes sense, since they lay claim to being the only ones who represent the interest of the working class.

In the 1970s, Tony Crosland worried that the Labour Party was being overtaken by a pro-European 'intellectual elite'. They sought 'the esteem of the liberal audience of columnists and TV commentators, college graduates also, with essentially middle-class values', who 'seldom ventured out of the introverted world of central London into the rougher provincial world where most Labour voters live'. Crosland thought middle-class liberals were too 'priggish and paternalistic'. Instead, Crosland argued that Labour needed 'a populist streak in our thinking'.

I was quite shocked. Kinnock effectively says he doesn't care about majority Labour governments. He is under the delusion there is an anti-Tory, 'progressive' majority out there. With whom? The Greens, who have hardly showered themselves in glory this past week? The Lib Dems, whose current leader was a Cabinet minister in a Conservative led-government?? The naivite is staggering. The most successful left-wing coalition out there *is* the Labour Party. He also propagates the myth that Labour is an unsuccesful political party. It's not. Labour has won 9 majorities since 1945; the Tories have won 10.

Thanks to @charliemansell for doing the maths every year on strength of different currents within Labour at Annual Conference. @labtowin took 55% of vote in NCC ballot, rising to 72% in NPF Ballot, where we won a thumping 48 of 55 seats. A good week's work, particular thanks to my co-director @CampaignJane and incredible staffers @TedWallMacc of LTW and @issywaite66 of @labour_first

Two by-elections losses show risk Greens end up in a pincer movement of their own if momentum stalls. As Burnham regains disillusioned progressives who went to the Greens from Labour. But at the same time having less appeal to voters in rural areas, losing to the Tories.

I’m not usually one to defend Zack Polanski, but the idea he doesn’t have at least one single connection to Camden is just nonsense. Look, here he is standing for the council there in 2015… as a Lib Dem… during the austerity coalition…

I hope the PR advocates in Labour realise that the consequence of electoral reform will be to end future Labour majority governments and to make the Liberal Democrats the kingmakers at most elections. As David Blunkett said, the Lib Dems behave 'like every harlot in history'. – at Faringdon, England
Sir Ed Davey has hinted that he would be open to a pact with the Conservatives after the next general election. The Liberal Democrat leader explicitly ruled out a deal with the Tories before the last general election, with his party going on to gain dozens of their previously safe seats⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

Building data centres could create huge opportunities for unionised construction jobs. Scotland has lots of water and wind farms that we have to pay to turn off. Building new nuclear to help power data centres would be great for jobs and the economy. thetimes.com/uk/scotland/art…

" The soft left’s plan to end Labour’s factional wars" would be a lot more believable if Mainstream's NEC candidates hadn't hooked up with the Corbynite factionalists of Momentum in the "Reset the Labour Party" joint venture. Mainstream aren't about ending factionalism. They are just a new faction, which far from being independent or equidistant in the party appears to be allied to the previously moribund Momentum.

The Green Party leadership in Hackney specifically telling the Mayor of an Israeli city that he has until *7 October* to respond to their intention to cancel their twinning agreement is some next level evil, even for those ghouls.
If I was the Mayor of Haifa, a city which houses the vulnerable Bahai community as well as tens of thousands of Arab Israelis, I think my response to this letter from Hackney Mayor Zoe Garbett would comprise of a string of four letter words. She has the absolute chutzpah to claim Hackney’s performative politics is about ‘anti-racism’. Chef’s kiss is that she is demanding a response by October 7 - was that date plucked out of thin air? Gaslighting nasty pricks.

Excl: Ministers should consider proscribing a militant transgender activist group which has targeted the offices of MPs, the government’s former adviser on political violence has said. Writing in The Times, @LordWalney said the conduct of the group Bash Back “deserves far more serious attention than it has so far received” and that ministers should test it against the same threshold that led to the proscription of Palestine Action. The Times previously revealed that the group had produced a guide for members urging them to arm themselves and carry out repeated illegal attacks on MPs and organisations. It comes after a court heard this week that Ann Widdecombe was struck 21 times on the head with a hammer. Walney stressed that he made no suggestion about who was responsible while proceedings were active, but said it was “a fair observation” that Bash Back had withdrawn none of its material since her death. “Not one image of masked, hammer-wielding activists. Not the guide instructing supporters to select political targets and strike them until they desist,” he said. “An organisation genuinely committed to non-violence, watching the country absorb the killing of a public figure in her own home, would have paused. This one did not.” thetimes.com/article/92edc11…

When you invite hordes of crazies into your party after Labour kicked them out and then worry that they are making it all a little too crazy, even for you, and you have to start thinking up ways to try and limit their influence. theguardian.com/politics/202…

This bullshit is an insult to service personnel and to the industry workers who make the ships, planes, guns and software that keep Putin deterred from attacking us. The labour movement has to grow up and stop deceiving itself that defence = "militarism". I'm glad the Labour Party itself is immune

Unbelievable nonsense. The military is a public service and protects our whole country, including our civilian public sector, from existential threats.
