You thought it was for us? No. In 1946, one year after WWII ended, the US sent the largest force ever to the bottom of the Earth. Nearly five thousand men. Why? They said it was for training. But what would you need training for in one of the deadliest conditions on the planet? Part of their orders stayed sealed and classified. The expedition came home with little to show, a few men dead, and a story that never quite added up. To this day, nobody can tell you for certain what they were after down there. Then in 1959, at the worst moment of the Cold War, with the US and the Soviet Union ready to end the world over Berlin, those same enemies sat down and agreed on one thing. Antarctica. No armies. No weapons. No borders. No one allowed to claim it. They locked the whole continent away and agreed on nothing else. So why? What makes a frozen desert so important that sworn enemies guard it together? Is it because something on the other side scares them more than they scare each other? Think about the timing. The largest military force ever sent south, in 1946. And 13 years later, the whole continent is locked down. Something happened in those 13 years, and I feel like we weren’t told about it (I know, I’m as shocked as you about the transparency of the government). But I keep returning to the question: if nothing is truly down there, why is it the one place on Earth they all agreed you can never go?
