Senior year at Syracuse University and about two years into building my business I got a shot at what was a big new client for me at the time. And I showed up late and unprepared.
I figured I’d “do it live” like I always did with school work. About 10 minutes into my pitch he cut me off. “You were late and you’re not prepared. I’ve been there. Come back when you’re ready and I’ll listen with fresh ears.”
I told him he was right and to give me a week. I came back and thankfully landed the account. It led to substantial growth for the business and a big lesson about being prepared.
Last week I was on the other side of that table. A newer entrepreneur I’d brought on to help with an initiative I’m working on showed up unprepared.
About 25 minutes in I had to stop them. They were pitching numbers that didn’t match and hadn’t been confirmed for something that would have been a big financial investment and risk for Gilded.
So I gave them the same offer I got years ago. They didn’t take it. They pushed back and got defensive instead. I’m not saying I was their version of that client...but who knows.
Anyone have a recruiter they recommend? Looking for someone to work with on an hourly basis for upcoming hires
The closest thing to a magic trick in business is launching an ad campaign that prints money.
We started a campaign with a new client last week and it's already printing money for them.
For every $1 they invest they get $3.54 in revenue and $20+ in lifetime value.
Thanks to @WhitmanatSU for the feature on the GILDED story (so far).

The best part about going out to bars with a mask on is that you can sing to the music without anyone knowing you’re singing or that you don’t know the words to the song.
#Hashtags are the 2022 equivalent of typing “http://” or “www.” before a web address—every word on the web can be a searchable keyword—no need for the number sign in front.
I wish more of my first-degree network used Twitter. I’m more interested in reading their thoughts than seeing their highlight reel.
