Let me preface this by saying I'm not disparaging the artists who enter golden demon. They are far more talented than myself in all regards and deserve recognition for their incredible talent. but there is a particular paint style aesthetic that golden demon requires to be considered that I respect and admire, but I don't personally care for. The style in particular is clean, perfectly blended colors, lighting done just right, almost always nmm. All are important tools to be sure, but the end result that golden demon entries require doesn't feel grimdark at all to me. People love bright and shiny things, but damnit if I dont want to see something completely deranged in a universe as twisted as 40k is. Like the flawless blade silver winner. Flawless in all respects. blending is perfect, lighting is spectacular, nmm perfectly executed, hours and hours poured into a tiny figure, but he's just so.....clean. He's a warp twisted abomination that looks like he got a thorough scrub down and has never seen battle before. When I think of chaos traitor legions who are servants of the dark gods, I think of twisted filthy vermin who have to scavenge for supplies. There's an argument for striving for excessive cleanliness because slaanesh I guess lol. The duel of the dread and the Trygon at least shows something gritty and more grimdark while still implementing all the things golden demon entries tend to trend towards style wise. I would even like to see more grime and fluids and texture here, but I get it. There is an aesthetic that one must abide by to be considered. I think that's why I like seeing nurgle entries because it may be the closest to what I'm looking to see because of all the goop and grossness that comes along with big pappa. but even here it looks so meticulously integrated that it somehow looks clean because of all the perfectly added light reflections and overall brightness. I want to say it again in case anyone is like who are you to say this shit you couldn't do any better blah blah blah yeah I know. I'm not comparing myself to these folks at all. Way out of my league by miles. I just wish the aesthetic of golden demon was darker for some categories. Make a grimdark category where people create the most filthy disgusting entries possible. war damaged battle armor, chaos tainted filth, bloody massacres and body horror. The decay and filth that comes with a universe full of stagnant and fallen empires. Congrats to the winners and everyone else who enters. Its intimidating and the level of talent is unlike ever before. I cant imagine what those judges have to go through trying to figure out which masterpiece deserves recognition when so many people are on such a higher level these days.
