I think the reason why EA was so dead-set on cancelling the Mass Effect game was because they hated the character and species designs. And TBH they were ass. I think BioWare should’ve introduced a new alien race of intelligent gorillas who travel by leaping and use tesla cannons.

related to this is my favorite thing about DA2: each act is mostly self-contained. some crazy bullshit happens to you in a very episodic way each time, it does a ton to sell the passage of time that in each act you're doing new bullshit with people you've seen face other monsters

Honestly moreso than managing to finish the game in under 2 years (which required unhealthy crunch) I did respect DA2's complete swerve towards a narrative where you get relentlessly crushed by the forces of history in a genre that's usually very "great man" in tone
