Thomas Edison did not invent electricity. He invented the electric bill.
A crucial understanding of the past.
By the late 1870s the physics was already public knowledge. Joseph Swan had a working incandescent bulb. Arc lamps were already scorching a handful of city streets.
Electricity was not a secret. What did not exist was a way to turn it into a monthly habit.
A lightbulb without a grid is a museum piece. Edison understood that the fortune was not in selling lamps. It was in selling kilowatt-hours the same way gas companies sold illumination: as an invisible, recurring utility that homeowners could not live without and could not easily replace.
So he did not just design a filament. He engineered a monopoly-ready machine.
He founded the Edison Electric Illuminating Company and built every layer of the stack: high-resistance filaments that lasted long enough to be sold, “Jumbo” dynamos that generated the current, parallel wiring that let customers turn lights on independently, vacuum pumps that made bulbs at industrial scale, safety fuses, and—the piece that actually printed money—the electric meter. The meter converted physics into accounts receivable.
In September 1882 he threw the switch at Pearl Street Station in lower Manhattan. Direct current flowed through copper buried in iron pipes under the streets to a few dozen wealthy customers inside a one-square-mile radius. Laborers had torn up New York to lay the pipes. That was not infrastructure. That was customer acquisition.
The business model was brilliant and the engineering was a trap. Direct current died after about a mile. To light a city Edison would have needed a coal plant on nearly every corner—an expensive, capital-intensive local monopoly. That was the point. He was not trying to electrify a continent. He was trying to own the lighting of a neighborhood and bill it forever.
George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla arrived with alternating current: voltage that could be stepped up, sent hundreds of miles, and stepped down at the house. Cheaper. Scalable. Fatal to Edison’s corner-store power-plant strategy.
Edison fought like a mad man protecting a franchise. He staged public electrocutions of animals to brand AC as a killer.
He lost the current war. The grid that now runs the world is Tesla and Westinghouse’s AC system.
Tesla is barely remembered for all he did and Edison is still a hooks hold name.
But look at the invoice that arrives at your house. Central generation. Last-mile wires. A meter. A monthly charge for an invisible commodity you cannot store and barely notice until it disappears. That architecture is Edison’s. He lost the physics and won the business.
The streets of Manhattan were not torn up for a lightbulb. They were torn up for a subscription.

I don't post here much these days. However, while I'm not a green party supporter (or any other), I'm really disappointed by @BBCNewsnight in doing Nigel's work in pushing this witch hunt on the #greenparty leader. #newsnight

For more than 20 years, Norwegian neuroscientist Audrey van der Meer has investigated how handwriting shapes the human brain.
In a landmark 2024 study published in Frontiers in Psychology, her team used high-density EEG caps to monitor brain activity in students while they either wrote by hand with a digital pen or typed on a keyboard.
The difference was dramatic. Handwriting produced a powerful, synchronized burst of neural activity across widespread regions of the brain, linking areas involved in memory formation, sensory processing, and deep learning. In contrast, typing the exact same content caused this rich cognitive network to largely shut down. Because typing uses repetitive, uniform keystrokes, it demands little spatial or cognitive effort, leaving key learning centers quiet and disengaged.
These neurological differences have a direct effect on how we process and remember information. Earlier research by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer at Princeton University reached similar conclusions. Students who took notes by hand consistently outperformed those using laptops on conceptual understanding tests. Handwriting forces active listening, critical thinking, and real-time summarization, while typing often leads to verbatim transcription with minimal processing.
Our brains function as part of an embodied biological system. Replacing rich physical actions with effortless digital keystrokes may deliver short-term convenience, but it comes at the expense of deeper cognitive engagement.
The solution is simple and timeless: pick up a pen.

Meanwhile, a new industry emerges to tackle the issue.
Once upon a time 12v car batteries were a major issue as recycling wasn’t available
Currently we sell 500 million a year, about 9 million metric tonnes.
Now they are considered one of the most recycled components on the planet with up to 99% of their components recycled, all this despite their toxic make up.
Wind turbines. Companies like enva.com/ take these blades and transform them in to components to replace fossil fuel at ‘energy to waste’ plants that manufacture cement.
This will happen worldwide as the need arises.
Meanwhile, old farts like this would rather you stick to burning gas and coal. The good news is, the world ain’t listening anymore.
On January 1, 2026, the European wind industry implemented a self-imposed landfill ban on turbine blades.
This has left many countries scrambling silently for solutions. Landfill has become the next unwanted crisis, yet it's the conversation no one wants to have. Germany, Finland, and the Netherlands have banned blade landfills, and so for a time they are being exported to countries like the UK or France, where they can still be buried.
Banning waste like turbine blades doesn't make it vanish though—it just puts it on a truck to a neighbour's backyard. Low-scale solutions are often cited as the answer, like turning blades into noise barriers, bridges or playground equipment.
How do you turn 43 million tons of blade waste from turbines into park benches and koala crossings? How many park benches does one planet actually need?
Modern recycling for glass and carbon fibre often requires pyrolysis (high-heat chemical decomposition). To recycle a 'green' blade, you must burn an immense amount of energy to break down the resins.
We are trading a physical waste problem for a new energy demand problem. People love a quirky solution that highlights the absurdity of the problem—like the image of a massive 80-metre blade being used as a single, very long bus shelter.
Even 'green' solutions have a physical footprint that can't be wished away by a spreadsheet.
