"The longevity industry exists to exploit humanity, not to save it." - Seamus O'Mahony writes @TheLancet Or, as he puts it, "the longevity industry is a goldrush without gold." Talk about throwing out the baby with the bathwater! Of course, the field is drowning in hype and commercial interests pushing unproven interventions. But that doesn't detract from the fact that slowing human aging - even if slightly - would have enormous health and medical benefits. Manipulating human aging may prove harder than many in the field currently promise. But aging is no doubt malleable, so let's not lose sight of the field's long-term transformative potential. The challenge is to tell hype from science, not to dismiss the science because of the hype.

I can’t believe it’s been TEN YEARS (this week!) since I visited the world’s largest radio telescope, FAST in southern China, to film an episode of Impossible Engineering. It’s genuinely one of the most awesome (in the original sense) things I’ve ever seen.

The series is actually now watchable for free online! You can check out this whole episode here: youtube.com/watch?v=o2l7xADx… (That link skips to a bit with me in it, in case you’re interested.)

what I would like is for someone with programming skills to make a bit of software to search the internet for GMC registered drs making these sort complaints and report, as well as ASA. let me know if you have these very particular skills and are in need of a thankless task
the @ASA_UK complaint I made was upheld about Do Health @drchatterjeeuk. Commercial screening brings false positives, false reassurance, overdiagnosis. Will the @gmcuk act on the dozens of drs making false claims and have commercial conflicts of interests?

Great to see the launch of AD-SMART, a multi-arm platform trial to test new drugs for Alzheimer’s in the UK’s NHS. We would love to see something similar for repurposed longevity medicines—which might even be some of the same drugs! bbc.com/news/articles/cqlye4…

This is bonkers surely? Surely whichever camp you fell in in covid discussions* the lesson is that coronavirus at least was controllable? *with the exception of the niche, but suprisingly still extant "we hit herd immunity in March 2020" camp
I cannot believe this. The 2024 NHS pandemic plan states the following generic assumptions: “it will not be possible to halt the spread of a new pandemic virus, and it would be a waste of public health resources and capacity to attempt to do so.” england.nhs.uk/long-read/fra…

Graph title should be: the US population has grown, and they are on average older. @EricTopol’s very next post is an age-adjusted rate graph…and heart disease is trending downwards aside from a pandemic-related spike!
Heart disease deaths are on the rise in the US

I actually think we should aspire to bring total death rate down—age-adjusting implicitly suggests that biological ageing is something we can’t do anything about! But total deaths is always going to be proportional to population because maths, so it’s not that interesting IMO…

Our Director @statto opened the @AdinberriFund Longevity Forum this morning in Donostia / San Sebastián, Spain. Spain has a life expectancy of 84, which is one of the highest in the world—so it’s an especially important place to discuss longevity science and policy.
🗣️ @statto: “I think most of us know that older people are more likely to die, but just how much really shocked me” 🔬 The scientist opens #AdinberriLongevityForum with the latest advances in ageing science and the potential to live longer, healthier lives.

Excited to speak at the @AdinberriFund Longevity Forum today! Spain has one of the world’s highest life expectancies—and I’m going to be talking about the longevity science that could keep Spaniards even healthier for even longer!

People, including doctors, trust AI too much. It’s automation bias: ‘computer does arithmetic with perfect speed and accuracy’ is a good heuristic, but has transferred across to much fuzzier tasks.
Even with physicians "in-the-loop," in this case experienced specialists, adversarial AI increased the harmful decision rate from 2 to 49%. A randomized assessment of case scenarios, not actual patients, but indicative of the limitation of oversight. preprint medrxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Now that we know aging interventions can be developed, it makes sense to view aging itself as a root cause of disease It has of course always been…
If they added ‘ageing’ proper to this, rather than somehow separating out the ‘unhealthy’ part, it would dwarf all the other bars…

This has to be the most interesting and sobering paper of the year. It estimates the global health impacts across all measurable threats to health to 2100 using amenable disability adjusted life years (DALYs). The leading threat to health? Obesity, including high BMI, poor diet, and low physical activity. Food systems are one of the key ways to address obesity and other leading threats to health in the 21st Century. thelancet.com/journals/lance…

The rule for awarding a Nobel to three living recipients makes for some pretty unfair prize-ing…
Nobel Prize for optogenetics shared by 3 (Deisseroth, Nagel and Hegemann). There will 'oh-so-close' feelings at MIT by the first author of Deisseroth's paper, the prominent neuroscientist Edward Boyden. /more

This is another issue! Just need to wait for two of them to die, which is a bit morbid…and their own therapy might make less likely! xitter.cf/vivienneparry/status/2…
Replying to @statto
The just 3 rule also shuts out some deserved winnners…like for discovery of GLP1s. Dan Drucker and Jens Holst for sure but 3rd place could be one of a cast of at least 5 which may mean none will have Nobel.
