I generally avoid political posts on here, but I really hope we can move away from this creeping rhetoric where half the country is getting punished based on who they voted for. We've already seen tangible examples with how Colorado was treated. I don't want the next Democratic administration to stiff Florida on hurricane funding to "punish" them for voting red. This attitude is antithetical to the whole concept of the Union and really needs to be addressed (I think it might be something actually worthy of impeachment). We're all Americans regardless of who you voted for. Sadly it feels like bipartisanship is dead sometimes, but we have to try.

There's been a lot of people (who all clearly know better) who have greased the wheels to getting Trump elected again by making a mountain out of a molehill (see: Hunter Biden, laptop).
So many average (dumb) voters were led to believe that 'everyone's corrupt, so it doesn't matter.' And now, despite the Biden admin being perhaps the cleanest admin in recent history, the country elected the most corrupt administration in history (x100).
Anyway, picture unrelated.

Inspired by this tweet, a midterm update on Trump playing politics with disaster relief: It's still happening.
Neither Nicki Minaj (not a citizen), her husband (registered sex offender), nor her brother (serving 25 to life for predatory sexual assault against a minor) are able to vote in the US

I don't even know where to begin but I'm feeling ranty today, I guess, so lfg.
in 2024, the US had a trade surplus with Brazil to the tune of $7.4bln, a 39% increase over 2023. Trump is proposing 50% tariffs on Brazil, ostensibly over trade. transparently, we see it's to punish them for prosecuting a criminal he likes while claiming we have a "very unfair trade relationship."
Brazil is currently a significant exporter of beef to the US, making up for shortages in domestic production, but I'll get to that later.
along with an earlier decree of 10% tariffs on any country that aligns with the "anti-American policies of BRICS," he rants today in an open letter to Lula about "hundreds of secret and unlawful censorship orders to US social media platforms" (a move he calls "insidious attacks on... the fundamental Free Speech Rights of Americans") and the "witch hunt" against Bolsonaro.
in the letter, Trump refers to Bolsonaro as "a Highly Respected Leader throughout the World during his Term, including by the United States."
as a reminder, during Bolsonaro's term, he: relaxed gun control restrictions, weakened protections for indigenous lands and communities, transferred the oversight on indigenous land to the Agriculture Ministry (a conflict of interest with grave outcomes), enabled illegal mining, increased Amazon deforestation to the highest level in more than 15 years, weakened environmental protections and cut budgets for key organizations, reduced support and protection for LGBTQ communities, falsely claimed people who were vaccinated for COVID-19 were at a higher risk of contracting AIDS, and had to pay damages for slandering one journalist and making sexual comments to another. the "witch hunt" Trump refers to is regarding multiple charges related to allegations he formed a criminal organization and attempted a coup to remain in power when he lost the election to Lula in 2022.
how familiar.
ftr, he's also told a congresswoman she wasn't worthy of being raped, said in an interview he wouldn't love his gay son, said "a policeman who doesn't kill isn't a policeman," and is nostalgic for Brazil's military dictatorship.
how familiar.
(shout-out to I'm Still Here, a 2024 film/bp nom based on a true story and set during Brazil's military rule - you should see if you haven't)
back to the beef: I'll be a bit of an opportunist here for a topic close to my heart and take this moment to post a map of the companies in the US and abroad who are the largest contributors to Amazon deforestation. these are some of your importers who will see a 50% tariff.
beef is the primary driver of deforestation in the Amazon (Brazil is the world's largest beef exporter and could become the largest producer - replacing the US - in 2026).
in April 2025, Brazil exported a reported 48,000 metric tons of beef to the US (up from 8,000 tons in April 2024) and, because of the US obsession with beef products, this is largely attributed to a cattle shortage and the "need" for foreign meat not being produced domestically.
Trump declares the 50% tariffs are needed to "level the playing field" and "rectify grave injustices of the current regime," claiming Brazil can avoid them by building or manufacturing in the US. but he's simply attempting to bully a trade partner - with which we have a surplus! - to save a dictator with a deplorable record in ecological and social/human rights that he tries to justify with arguments of economics.
how familiar.
This was the obvious motivation, he's going to try to wedge Grok into the film industry to make the cinemas match his deranged twitter feed here's the first step.
Elon Musk has reportedly invested around $1 billion into Skydance (the merged Warner Bros/Paramount company).

"Wildwood" took nearly 15 years to make, with 231 puppets and 136 sets, making it the longest stop motion film ever made.
No offence to the Clankers but I want to learn more stuff from more humans. I went looking for a site or something for this but there isn't one? The closest thing I found was Trade School which had a barter system but closed in 2019. Maybe I'll make one?
Basically I want to trade lunch for something you love. If we're in the same place (in the next few months I'll be in Ireland, Portugal, NC, NYC, Colorado, Seattle) let me buy you lunch while you tell/show/teach me something. Online could also work I guess, and I'll send a delivery gift card?
I'm up for learning lots of things, some examples
- getting better at coding with agents
- playing guitar (or if you can teach me asalato it would change my life) or some sort of craft
- improving my writing practice
- being a gaffer
- personal finance
- probably anything else you're passionate about
I'm leaving my company at the end of the year and this also seems like a good way to find inspiration to decide what's next.

As a business owner, I'd add five more keys from my own marriage:
- My wife and I always choose fun. There's an option to have fun in everything we do, even the boring things, and we have a much better time when we don't take things too seriously.
- We never let anything slide. When something frustrates either of us, we address it as soon as possible, so nothing builds up in the background until it blows up.
- We're not afraid to confront each other. We love each other enough to bring up a struggle, make it about the behavior or the issue, and solve it together.
- We always find new adventures together, and travel is something we both really enjoy. It's a privilege that my work takes me everywhere and that I get to bring her along a lot of the time.
- We never talk badly about each other to anyone else, and any frustration is for the two of us to figure out. Whatever we say about each other to other people forms the thoughts and beliefs in our own heads.
Keys to a happy long-term relationship:
- be obsessed with each other
- be very affectionate
- laugh together
- eat together
- want ~the same things out of life
- support each other’s dreams
- don’t blame your partner for your bullshit
- figure out how to both get great sleeps every night
- learn how to co-exist in a space, manage chores + orderliness in a way that feels good for you both
- actually listen to each other
- take responsibility for yourself
- be curious about each other’s worldview
- apologize + admit when you’re wrong
- talk about money, figure out your shared / differing beliefs about how you want to generate, save, spend
- always expand each other’s sense of what’s possible
- speak to the highest version of each other
- give gifts and gestures that show your partner you see + understand + think about them
- connection + quality time that do not center logistics / life operations
- build shared good habits
- fall in love with the life you’re building together

Hard to have a meaningful conversation about Dylan, The Beatles, etc now that the context they emerged from has been forgotten. There was little to nothing like Dylan's lyricism in popular music before he took off. His synthesis of influences shaped everything that followed.

It is an incredible fact that women in the past had far more children at older ages than women do today, even without the benefit of modern technology.
Assisted reproductive technology is supposed to extend the fertility window, and yet childbearing ends sooner now than it did in the past! 1/4

anyway, libraries are awesome and weird and important. taxes can suck but when they go to these institutions, it’s genuinely money well-spent
no one’s getting rich in these jobs, but they’re critical for community cohesion. they’ve also been catastrophically over-burdened by the failures of other civil systems, which means they’ve become hubs for social services and welfare.
that’s a reflection of the engineered incompetence of our government at every level. it alienates the standard-issue patron who wants to learn or participate, not be stressed or accosted by someone unstable or disruptive. this pressure on library systems is destructive (also IMO by design), because a literate, cohesive, participatory community is a Very Dangerous Thing to political machinations that rely on atomization, alienation, and derision between the public

I think @zillow should add a "What [this price] gets you elsewhere" feature that shows you properties available at a comparable price in other parts of the country when you're looking at a listing
For the price of a 600-square-foot studio condo in Manhattan, you could own a 16-room 1878 French Second Empire mansion in West Virginia.

Columbia just showed a lot of "unresponsive" ICU patients were awake the whole time
41 patients with severe brain injuries, none could follow a single command
They put a regular EEG cap on them(no implant, no surgery) and played a beep
Patients were told to change the beep's pitch just by imagining opening and closing their hand
About 1 in 3 did it. With their thoughts. A few days into the hospital
Same team found hidden consciousness in ~15% of patients like this back in 2019, so the bedside exam has been missing people for years
Next step is letting them signal pain or hunger. Families already asked for a loved one's voice to be built in
Our kids won't believe we used to decide who was "gone" by asking them to squeeze a hand.
