JUST IN: Pope Leo XIV today spoke by telephone with Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, 3 days after speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In a statement the Vatican said:
“In the course of the conversation, the Holy Father recalled the grave situation in the city of Oleshky, in the Kherson region, and made reference to the request for a humanitarian ceasefire that he had presented to the President of the Russian Federation.
His Holiness expressed the hope that cooperation between both parties will allow for the delivery of food and medical aid, and for the voluntary and safe evacuation of the civilian population.
Finally, the Holy Father reaffirmed the commitment of the Holy See to promoting dialogue and peace.”

A homeless man approached a taco vendor in Ecuador asking for something to eat. Instead of taking his money, the vendor prepared a meal for him—and then realized that what he needed most wasn’t just food, but a warm hug. ❤️

I have slowly come to terms with the horrifying fact that an absolutely MASSIVE group of people in this country believe that murdering your own children is an appropriate response to sadness.

4. What we are doing now is to explain the value of freedom to the world, through our compassion to whom we love, so much that we are willing to sacrifice the freedom of our own. I'm still learning to conquer the fear and I believe you are with me along this journey.

From my friend and colleague @frances_hui :
“As I write these words in exile, I often think about the teenagers we were in Scholarism, brought together by the desire for a better future in the city we loved. Without Joshua stepping forward at such a young age, many of us might never have realized that we too have a voice.
Exile is not freedom in its fullest sense. But each morning in the United States, I wake up able to speak and organize. Joshua cannot. That freedom gives me a responsibility to use the voice he has been denied.
Joshua would not want his case to eclipse the hundreds of other political prisoners in Hong Kong. Before his imprisonment, he regularly drew attention to people facing even greater risks than his own. But forgetting Joshua would serve the authorities’ purpose.
The U.S. and other democratic governments should publicly make Joshua’s release — and that of other political prisoners in Hong Kong — a priority in every high-level discussion with Beijing. Leaders who once praised his courage should not fall silent when defending him requires taking concrete actions and spending diplomatic capital.”

Sir Iain Duncan Smith echoes calls for the Prime Minister to meet with the Lai family.
He also urged the government to threaten sanctions. The government said it condemns the politically motivated prosecution of Jimmy Lai and continues to call for his immediate release.
Jimmy is 78, a British citizen, and founder of Apple Daily. He has spent nearly six years in solitary confinement, and has an additional sentence of 20 years.
It's time to bring him home.
